You know those conversations where you arrange to meet someone for coffee, thinking you’ll talk a little about work, perhaps exchange a few ideas, and then somehow end up discussing life, identity, the decisions you’ve made and whether you’re actually enjoying any of it?

That kind of conversation.

And somewhere along the way, I shared a question I often ask myself to help me stay present and really enjoy whatever I’m experiencing.

What if today was your last day?

Quite a dramatic question for a casual evening in Soho, I know.

But I love questions like that because they have a rather inconvenient way of cutting through all the nonsense.

What would you do differently? Who would you want to see? What would suddenly become completely irrelevant?

And perhaps more interestingly, what are you currently postponing that you might regret never having experienced?

I use this question to bring myself back to the moment I’m actually living, instead of spending it worrying about tomorrow or thinking about everything I still need to do.

I was thinking about this afterwards, and because apparently I am physically incapable of having a philosophical thought without eventually dragging somebody’s wardrobe into it, I started thinking about clothes.

Specifically, all the beautiful things women buy and then refuse to wear.

And believe me, I have seen enough wardrobes to know this is practically an international sport.

There’s the beautiful silk dress that has been waiting for a wedding invitation since approximately 2022. The expensive shoes that are apparently too beautiful to be exposed to the pavement. The jacket that would look absolutely fantastic with jeans, except its owner has decided it’s evening wear, and therefore it must remain untouched until someone invites her to an appropriately fabulous event.

Who is organising these events, by the way?

And why are they taking so bloody long?

One of the things I find fascinating about working inside women’s wardrobes is how often we create these little rules for ourselves without even realising it.

We decide certain clothes are for weddings, others for important meetings, and some are apparently reserved for the woman we’re going to be when life becomes a little more exciting.

The woman who goes out more.

Who has somewhere fabulous to be on a Friday night.

Who is finally going to have the confidence to wear that enormous pair of earrings she absolutely loved when she bought them.

Except Friday comes, and she’s exhausted, and the earrings remain in their little box.

Fair enough. Sometimes a woman just wants to order food and sit on the sofa. I happen to think that’s a perfectly respectable Friday night.

But the strange thing is that some of these clothes could very easily be part of our everyday lives if we stopped insisting they belonged to an imaginary occasion.

I remember thinking about a beautiful silk dress that had been bought for a wedding and then barely worn because it felt too dressy for anything else.

And I thought, why?

Why couldn’t you put a lovely jumper over it, add some flat shoes and wear it for lunch?

The dress hasn’t signed a contract promising to attend formal events exclusively.

It doesn’t know it’s a wedding dress. YOU told it that.

And suddenly, instead of having one outfit for an occasion that might happen once every few years, you have a beautiful piece that can participate in your life.

This is something I feel quite strongly about as a stylist.

I don’t particularly like separating clothes into those rigid categories of workwear, weekend wear and occasion wear, because I think we end up limiting how much enjoyment we get from what we already own.

Of course, some things have practical limitations. I’m not suggesting you do the school run in a floor-length sequinned gown, although if you do, please send me a picture because I’d quite like to see it.

But there are so many pieces sitting in wardrobes that could have completely different lives with a little imagination.

And this is where I find styling much more interesting than shopping.

Because the question isn’t always, What do I need to buy?

Sometimes it’s, What haven’t I discovered about the clothes I already have?

I think we often underestimate how much our wardrobes are influenced by the stories we’ve attached to individual pieces.

That jacket belongs to a version of me who used to work in an office. That colour attracts too much attention. I’ll wear that dress when I’ve lost a little weight.

And sometimes those stories are years old.

We’ve changed jobs, moved cities, become mothers, started businesses, fallen in love, fallen out of love, changed our routines and completely rearranged our lives.

But the clothes are still sitting there waiting for permission from a woman who no longer lives the same life.

It’s rather absurd when you think about it.

And I wonder whether the same thing happens beyond our wardrobes.

How much of our lives are we keeping on hold because we’ve decided there’s a better moment coming?

We’ll enjoy ourselves when the business is making more money. We’ll take the trip when things calm down. We’ll finally do the things we’ve been talking about for years.

I’m particularly guilty of thinking that surely, at some point, life is going to become a little less busy.

HAHAHAHA.

As a single mother running two projects, I’m starting to suspect that particular day isn’t on the calendar.

And yet, when I look back at some of the loveliest things I’ve experienced lately, they weren’t the result of everything finally being perfectly organised.

They happened because I went.

Because I accepted an invitation, had a conversation with somebody interesting, turned up at an event, met someone new or made room for something I wanted to experience.

Sometimes I came home exhausted. Sometimes I had about a million other things I should probably have been doing.

But I’m glad I went.

That evening with Amy was one of those moments.

We didn’t need a special occasion to have a meaningful conversation. We just made time for one.

And perhaps that’s why I keep coming back to that question I shared with her.

Because I don’t want to keep postponing the enjoyable parts of life until I’ve reached some imaginary point where everything is sorted.

I’m almost 40, for God’s sake. How long exactly am I planning to wait?

And this brings me back to the wardrobe, because I genuinely believe getting dressed can be one of the simplest ways we practise that idea.

You have a beautiful piece of clothing that you love. You paid for it. You chose it because something about it made you feel excited.

And now it’s sitting in your wardrobe waiting for the world to provide an occasion worthy of its existence.

Meanwhile, you’re wearing the same four outfits because they’re easy, familiar and you know they work.

I talked about this in last week’s newsletter, ⁠Your Most-Worn Outfit Might Not Be Your Favourite⁠, actually, about how the outfits we wear most frequently aren’t necessarily our favourites. Sometimes they’re just the combinations our brains have learnt to reach for without too much effort.

And I think these two things are connected.

We have the clothes that make our lives easy, and then we have the clothes that make us feel something. But why have we decided those need to be two separate categories?

Why can’t we have both?

This is a big part of what I do through my Wardrobe Architect Method.

When I work with a woman, I’m not interested in creating a beautiful wardrobe that looks fantastic when all the doors are open but becomes completely useless at 7:30 in the morning.

I want to understand how she actually spends her time, what she loves wearing, what makes her feel wonderful and which pieces she’s forgotten she owns.

We look at her lifestyle, her proportions, the cuts and combinations that work for her, and then we begin creating outfit formulas using the clothes she already has.

And this is the bit I love.

Because sometimes all it takes is introducing one of those forgotten pieces into a combination she already feels comfortable wearing.

And instead of giving her another thirty things to think about every morning, we photograph the combinations and create her Ready-to-Wear LookBook, so she can actually see how everything works together.

She’s no longer relying on inspiration magically appearing when she’s already late.

The work has been done.

She can open her wardrobe, choose an outfit and get on with enjoying her day.

And for me, that’s what makes the system valuable.

Not the number of clothes, how expensive they are, or whether somebody looking at her wardrobe would be impressed.

It’s how much of that wardrobe she can actually enjoy.

Because I think there’s something quite sad about owning beautiful things that never get to be part of our memories.

A dress that never goes anywhere. Shoes that never dance. A jacket you loved enough to buy but apparently not enough to wear to the supermarket.

And yes, I know, it’s only clothes.

But clothes are also part of how we experience our lives.

Think about an outfit you remember wearing during a wonderful day. Perhaps it was a date, a holiday, a dinner with friends, a celebration or simply an afternoon when you felt particularly good about yourself.

You might remember the people you were with, the conversations you had, the way you felt and what you were wearing.

The clothes become part of the memory.

And the more we actually wear them, the more opportunities they have to collect those little stories.

They stop being objects we’re preserving for a future occasion and start becoming part of the life we’re already living.

I suppose that’s what I’ve been thinking about since that conversation with Amy.

Not that we should spend every day behaving as though it’s our last, because quite frankly I have children to feed, bills to pay and a business to run.

I can’t be off living my final twenty-four hours every Monday.

But perhaps we could stop waiting for everything to feel special before allowing ourselves to enjoy what we already have.

I don’t think we need to turn ordinary life into one continuous celebration. There will always be laundry, emails, school paperwork and mornings when wearing the same comfortable trousers is exactly what we want.

But I would quite like us to stop treating the beautiful parts of our wardrobes as though they belong to a more deserving version of ourselves.

The woman you are today is allowed to wear the good dress.

Even if she’s just going for lunch.

Even if she’s going alone.

Even if nobody particularly important is going to see her.

Actually, especially then.

Because what makes an occasion special anyway?

Who gets to decide?

And if you’re waiting for someone else to invite you into a life where you finally feel entitled to wear the things you love, perhaps you could start by giving yourself permission.

So here’s what I’d love you to try this week.

Go into your wardrobe and find one piece you’ve been saving.

Something you genuinely love but rarely wear because you’ve convinced yourself it requires a particular occasion.

Now, instead of asking where you could possibly wear it, ask yourself how you could wear it differently.

Could you make it more casual? Could it work with something you wear regularly? Could you change the shoes, add a jumper, swap the jacket or use accessories to give it a completely different personality?

You might discover that the occasion you’ve been waiting for isn’t necessary after all.

Perhaps Thursday will do.

I have absolutely no idea how it’s Friday already.

Honestly, where has this week gone?

I had a newsletter to publish yesterday. THURSDAY. The day I publish my newsletter every single week, and somehow I completely forgot that Thursday had even happened.

Excellent organisational skills from a woman who teaches other women how to make their mornings easier.

In my defence, it’s been one of those weeks where I’ve been everywhere, talking to everyone, having the most fascinating conversations and somehow arriving home with another twenty-seven ideas for things I want to do.

Last Monday I was in The Sloane Club exploring a pop-up with independent fashion brands for What’s Worth Wearing, the project I co-founded with Rickylee. And one of the things I love about doing this is getting to meet people who are making clothes because they have something they genuinely want to express.

Not because an algorithm has decided that burgundy is having a moment or because apparently we’re all supposed to be dressing like the same woman who owns a very expensive coffee machine.

These designers have their own ideas, their own references, their own ways of looking at the world, and I find that fascinating.

Some of the pieces are things I would wear immediately. Others are completely outside my personal taste, but I can still appreciate the imagination and craftsmanship behind them.

And I think that’s one of the things I enjoy most about fashion. There are so many ways of expressing who we are, and none of us needs to look like anybody else.

Which got me thinking about something I see all the time when I’m working with women’s wardrobes.

The outfit you wear most often might not actually be your favourite.

I know. Slightly offensive thing for a personal stylist to say.

Especially when you’ve probably spent years telling yourself that those black trousers and that particular jumper are your absolute favourites because you wear them three times a week.

But hear me out.

Our brains are rather fond of familiarity. They like knowing what’s coming, they like things that have worked before, and they’re especially enthusiastic about not having to make another bloody decision at 7:30 in the morning.

So when you find an outfit that fits, feels comfortable and doesn’t require too much thinking, your brain remembers it.

And the next time you’re standing in front of your wardrobe, half asleep, with approximately fourteen things already demanding your attention, guess what it suggests?

The same outfit.

Very helpful. Thank you, brain.

Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with repeating clothes. In fact, I encourage it. I don’t understand this idea that we need to look completely different every time we leave the house, as though the people at the supermarket or the office are keeping records of how many times we’ve worn our favourite jeans.

Nobody cares, darling. Wear the jeans.

But there’s a difference between repeating an outfit because you genuinely love it and repeating it because it’s the only combination you know you can rely on.

And sometimes we confuse the two.

I’ve worked with women who have beautiful wardrobes full of interesting clothes, colours, textures, dresses, jackets and pieces they’ve collected over the years, but when I ask them what they actually wear, they show me the same five or six combinations.

Then I start pulling things out.

A jacket they bought because they absolutely loved it but haven’t worn in two years. A beautiful blouse that’s apparently waiting for an occasion nobody can identify. A skirt they adore but have somehow convinced themselves only works with one particular pair of shoes.

And suddenly we have a completely different conversation.

Because these women don’t necessarily lack personal style. Often they have a very clear sense of what attracts them, what they find beautiful and what they would love to wear.

They simply haven’t figured out how to make those things work in their actual lives.

So they return to what they know.

And the more often they repeat the familiar outfit, the more natural it feels, while everything else starts requiring an unreasonable amount of effort.

I sometimes think our wardrobes are full of little relationships like this.

There are the clothes we love looking at, the clothes we love the idea of wearing, the clothes we bought for a version of our lives that hasn’t quite materialised, and then the clothes we actually reach for on a Wednesday morning when we have seven minutes to leave the house.

Those last ones usually win.

Not necessarily because they’re the most beautiful, but the easiest.

And this is why, when I work with a client, I don’t begin by telling her what she should be wearing.

I want to know what her life looks like.

Where is she going during the week? What does she do for work? How often is she meeting clients, working from home, going out, travelling, spending time with her children or doing all those things that somehow never make it onto our carefully organised calendars?

Because an outfit can be absolutely gorgeous and still be completely useless to the woman who owns it.

I could create the most spectacular look for somebody, but if she spends her mornings running between school drop-offs, meetings and the Tube, and the outfit requires fifteen minutes of adjustments every time she sits down, how often do you think she’s going to wear it?

Exactly.

And that’s where the first part of my Wardrobe Architect Method comes in: Lifestyle Profiling.

It sounds very technical, doesn’t it?

But essentially, we’re looking at the life you actually live rather than the life your wardrobe seems to think you live.

Because those two things are not always on speaking terms.

Once I understand that, I start identifying the shapes, proportions, colours and combinations that work for your body and your lifestyle, and we build outfit formulas around them.

Now, when I say outfit formulas, I don’t mean a uniform that makes you look identical every day.

Quite the opposite.

A formula is simply a combination you know works, which means you don’t have to start from zero every morning.

Perhaps you love wide-leg trousers with a fitted top and a structured jacket. Brilliant. That’s one formula.

But that doesn’t mean you need to wear the same black trousers, the same white top and the same blazer until one of you retires.

You can change the colours, fabrics, shoes, accessories and the way you style the pieces while keeping the proportions that make you feel fantastic.

And this is where it becomes fun.

Because you get to keep the ease your brain loves without sacrificing the creativity that makes getting dressed interesting.

I often tell women that I want getting dressed to become as quick as ordering a coffee.

Although, to be fair, some people take an extraordinarily long time ordering coffee, so perhaps that analogy needs reviewing.

The point is that I don’t want you standing in front of your wardrobe every morning trying to invent an entirely new outfit.

I want you to have combinations ready that you already know work, but with enough variation that you can choose how you want to express yourself that day.

Some mornings you might feel like wearing colour. Other mornings you want something simple, elegant and quiet. Perhaps you’re speaking at an event and want to feel particularly powerful, or you’re meeting a friend for coffee and feel like wearing those fabulous shoes that have been waiting patiently for some attention.

All of those women are you.

And your wardrobe should have room for them.

Something else I’ve noticed is that when women begin experimenting with their existing clothes, they often discover they have much more personal style than they originally thought.

They just weren’t giving themselves the opportunity to explore it.

And I think this is what I’ve been enjoying so much about the conversations I’ve had this week, particularly around independent fashion and the people we meet through What’s Worth Wearing.

There’s something wonderful about seeing somebody express an idea through a garment and then realising that another person might take that same piece and make it completely their own.

That’s what styling is to me.

The designer creates something, but the person wearing it continues the story.

And sometimes that story changes depending on the day, the mood, the occasion or simply because you’ve woken up and decided you fancy being a little more colourful.

Why not?

I’ve been thinking about this beyond clothes, actually.

How many things do we continue doing simply because we’ve always done them that way?

We go to the same places, order the same things, follow the same routines and sometimes even describe ourselves in the same way for years, without stopping to ask whether those choices still reflect what we enjoy.

Not that there’s anything wrong with familiarity. I love my routines too.

But I don’t want familiarity to become the reason I stop being curious.

And I certainly don’t want that for my clients.

Because personal style isn’t something you discover once and then preserve in a little glass box for the rest of your life.

You’re allowed to experiment. You’re allowed to change your mind about a colour you thought you hated, wear something unexpected, discover a new silhouette or decide that the clothes you loved five years ago no longer interest you.

You don’t need to become a different person to try something different.

You might simply be giving another part of yourself a little more attention.

So here’s something I’d love you to try this weekend.

Open your wardrobe and look at the five outfits you wear most often.

Not the five you think are your favourites. The ones you actually wear.

Then ask yourself why.

Is it the fit? The colour? The comfort? The way they make you feel? Or is it simply that you already know which shoes go with them and you can’t be bothered to investigate any further?

No judgement. We’ve all been there!

Now look at the clothes you rarely wear but still love.

Could you use one of your familiar outfit formulas and introduce one of those forgotten pieces?

Maybe it’s a different jacket, a more interesting shoe, a colour you’ve been avoiding or a piece of jewellery that completely changes the mood of the outfit.

You don’t need to reinvent your wardrobe this weekend.

Just interrupt the autopilot for a moment and see what happens.

I have a question for you.

When was the last time you looked in the mirror and immediately noticed something you liked?

Not after checking whether your stomach looked flat enough, your arms were behaving themselves or that bloody wrinkle between your eyebrows had finally decided to pack its bags.

I mean, actually looked at yourself and thought, God, I love that about me.

Because I find it fascinating how we can stand in front of a mirror with an entire human being looking back at us, and somehow our eyes go straight to the three square centimetres we’re unhappy with.

And the funniest thing is that sometimes the feature we’ve spent half our lives trying to hide is exactly the one someone else finds beautiful.

Anyway, let me tell you what happened on Monday.

I went to my hip-hop class. Yes, I do hip-hop. No, I’m not particularly good at it yet, but I have a wonderful time pretending otherwise.

I normally go on Wednesdays, but this week I changed my class to Monday, and there I bumped into a model I worked with earlier this year.

We started chatting, and he was telling me how incredible this London Fashion Week had been for him. His career has really started taking off, his agency is calling him for bigger projects, including opportunities connected with GQ, and suddenly he’s finding himself in rooms he wasn’t getting into before.

And then he said something that really stayed with me.

He’s Indian, dark-skinned and not particularly tall by traditional male modelling standards. For a long time, he thought those things were working against him because he didn’t look like the men he believed agencies wanted.

And now those are precisely the characteristics they’re calling him for.

His look is distinctive. You remember him.

He told me that something shifted when he stopped seeing those features as disadvantages and started embracing them, and I found that SO interesting because imagine spending years thinking you need to look more like everybody else to succeed, only to discover that the reason people want you is because you DON’T.

The irony.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about how often I see exactly this with women.

Not necessarily in modelling, but in everyday life, where we seem to spend an extraordinary amount of time negotiating with our own bodies.

Think about the woman with beautiful broad shoulders who never wears anything sleeveless because she’s convinced they make her look masculine. Or the woman with a fuller bust who hides underneath oversized tops because she doesn’t want to draw attention to it.

Then there’s the woman with gorgeous curves who has decided that black, loose clothing is her only option, and the woman with a prominent nose who has spent twenty years wishing she had somebody else’s profile, while another person looks at her and sees the most interesting face in the room.

And I’m not suggesting that every feature we dislike is secretly going to become our favourite. Sometimes we simply don’t love something about ourselves, and that’s fine.

But I wonder how much of our personal style we sacrifice trying to make those things disappear.

Because there’s something I’ve noticed working with clients, and it happens so often that I now recognise it almost immediately.

The parts of our bodies we’re most determined to hide often become the very parts we accidentally emphasise.

Think about it.

When you’re getting dressed with the sole intention of concealing something, every decision revolves around it. Instead of asking yourself whether you actually love the outfit, you’re checking whether it hides your stomach. And rather than enjoying the beautiful neckline, the proportions, the colour or how the fabric moves, you’re busy examining whether your hips look smaller.

Sometimes, in the process of trying to conceal one feature, you end up creating a silhouette that draws even more attention to it.

I see women who feel uncomfortable about their stomach choosing oversized tops because they believe the extra fabric will hide everything, when depending on the cut and where the fabric falls, it can actually add volume to the area they’re trying to minimise.

Or women who avoid anything fitted because they’re self-conscious about their hips, without realising that the shape they’ve chosen is completely disguising their waist and changing the proportions of their entire silhouette.

And this is not because they’re doing anything wrong. It’s simply because nobody has ever taught them how clothing actually works on their particular body.

This is the part of styling that I find absolutely fascinating, because clothes aren’t just pieces of fabric we put on.

They’re lines, shapes, proportions, textures and colours, and every morning we’re arranging all of those elements around our bodies, whether we’re conscious of it or not.

A neckline can change where the eye travels, the length of a jacket can completely alter the proportions of an outfit, and something as simple as the placement of a waistline or the way trousers fall from the hips can change what we notice first.

It’s almost architectural, which is probably why I ended up calling my method The Wardrobe Architect.

And once you understand these principles, you can start using styling to build a visual composition around your body, directing attention towards the features you love and allowing the ones you’re less enthusiastic about to become quieter.

You don’t need to change your body to do any of this. You need to understand it.

And that understanding gives you options.

Perhaps you love your legs but aren’t particularly fond of your stomach. Fine! We can work with that. Maybe you have beautiful shoulders, a gorgeous neckline or a waist you’d love to emphasise, but you’ve spent years hiding all of it because you’ve been so focused on something else.

We can work with that too.

But there’s a difference between getting dressed thinking what do I need to hide today? and opening your wardrobe wondering what would I love to show?

And I think that little shift changes much more than the outfit.

Because the moment you stop organising your appearance around the things you dislike, you begin noticing everything else that’s been there all along.

You discover the colours that make your skin look incredible, the cuts that work beautifully with your proportions and those particular outfits that make you walk a little differently because you KNOW you look good.

Suddenly getting dressed becomes something creative again, something you participate in rather than something you endure.

I often wonder how many women have wardrobes full of perfectly good clothes but never really enjoy wearing them because they’ve spent so long looking at themselves through the lens of what’s wrong.

And honestly, who decided those things were wrong in the first place?

Fashion changes its mind every five minutes.

One decade we’re supposed to be thin, then we’re supposed to have curves, and then apparently we need the waist of one woman, the hips of another and the face of someone who hasn’t aged since 2007.

Very reasonable expectations. Thank you, everyone.

Meanwhile, beauty has always been subjective, and if you think about the people you find attractive, I doubt they’re all the same height, the same shape or have identical faces.

Sometimes it’s somebody’s smile, a strong nose, a gap between the teeth, an unusual face or simply the way somebody moves and carries themselves.

Something that makes them unmistakably them.

And that’s what I loved about the conversation with the model, because the features he once considered obstacles have become part of what makes his professional identity so distinctive.

He didn’t need to erase them. In fact, the very idea of trying to erase them now seems rather ridiculous, doesn’t it?

Of course, we’re not all trying to become models or build careers around our appearance, but we’re all communicating something through how we present ourselves.

And I think there’s a connection here with personal branding that we don’t talk about enough.

We’re constantly being told to build a personal brand, be memorable, stand out, differentiate ourselves… and then we go and try to look like everybody else.

How ridiculous is that?

We copy the same outfits, the same aesthetic, the same idea of what a successful woman is supposed to look like, and sometimes we hide the very things that could make our presence unmistakable.

I’m not suggesting you need to turn every insecurity into your signature feature. You don’t have to wear something that makes you uncomfortable just to prove you’ve accepted yourself.

But perhaps you could start questioning whether that feature really deserves all the attention you’ve been giving it.

Because maybe it’s not the feature that’s holding you back as much as the relationship you’ve developed with it.

And this brings me to something I’ve been wanting to write about for a while.

Being pretty is a feeling.

I don’t mean that physical appearance doesn’t exist or that everyone will find everyone beautiful. They won’t, and thank God for that, otherwise we’d all be fighting over the same man.

Exhausting!!

What I mean is that how beautiful you feel has an enormous influence on how you experience yourself.

Think about the difference between going out wearing something you feel uncomfortable in, spending the entire evening pulling at your clothes, checking your reflection and wondering whether you’re standing at the right angle, and going out wearing an outfit that makes you feel absolutely fantastic.

You’re still the same woman.

But in the second scenario, you’re probably enjoying the conversation instead of wondering what your stomach is doing. You’re laughing, moving, making eye contact and actually participating in whatever is happening around you, rather than using half your brain to monitor how you look.

And people get to experience more of you because you’re no longer so preoccupied with everything you think you need to correct.

That’s the part I wish more women could experience.

And perhaps it begins with something very simple.

Tomorrow morning, when you open your wardrobe, instead of asking yourself what you need to hide, ask yourself what you love about your appearance today and how you could dress to celebrate it.

It might be your legs, your shoulders, your hair or your beautiful bum. Yes, your bum deserves recognition too.

Start there.

Learn how your clothes work with your body. Play with shapes, proportions and colours, and pay attention to the outfits that make you feel wonderful, because there’s usually a reason they work so well.

In fact, this is one of the exercises I encourage women to do before they even think about buying more clothes.

Start looking for the patterns in what you already love wearing.

Why do you always feel fantastic in those particular trousers? What is it about that jacket that makes every outfit look better? Why do you keep reaching for the same neckline or the same dress shape?

Those little repetitions tell us an enormous amount about our personal style, and once you begin recognising them, you can start making much more intentional decisions about what you wear.

And if there’s a feature you’ve spent years calling a flaw, perhaps give it another look. Not to force yourself to love it, but to see whether you’ve been judging it through somebody else’s idea of beauty.

That model I met on Monday reminded me of something I see in my work all the time.

Sometimes the thing that makes you different is the very thing that makes you memorable.

And what a shame it would be to spend your whole life trying to make it disappear.

I’ve just discovered something about the new John Galliano x Zara Re{form} collection and I genuinely had to read it twice.

Because look at these clothes.

Unfinished hems. Layers that look like they’ve been taken from different garments. Things turned inside out. Pieces that look dismantled and put back together again.

The collection is called Re{form}.

Galliano talks about going into Zara’s archives, taking existing pieces, cutting them, reversing them, changing their proportions, pulling them apart and creating something new from them.

Lovely.

Upcycling, right?

NO.

Well… not quite.

The archive pieces were part of Galliano’s creative process. They became prototypes. The designs that you and I can actually buy were then reproduced in new materials.

Sorry, WHAT?

So we’re making new clothes look like old clothes that have been transformed into new clothes? 🤯

Fashion really does keep me humble.

And listen, creatively, I actually LOVE the idea.

Galliano taking a completely ordinary Zara garment, ripping apart everything we understand it to be and asking what else could this become?

That is fashion.

That is creativity.

That is exactly the kind of thing that makes me excited about clothes.

My issue is somewhere else.

Because we are living through a moment where words like archive, reform, rework, circular, conscious, rescued and reimagined carry currency.

We WANT to believe we’re consuming differently.

And apparently we’ve now reached the point where even sustainability has developed an aesthetic.

Make it slightly unfinished.

Put a seam somewhere unexpected.

Turn something inside out.

Add a piece of lace that looks like it once belonged to somebody’s grandmother.

Voilà.

It looks rescued.

Except looking upcycled doesn’t make something upcycled.

In the same way that putting my gym clothes on doesn’t mean I actually went to Pilates.

Believe me, I’ve tested this theory.

I know what upcycling looks like because I’ve watched it happen properly.

My friend and business partner Rickylee and I once went down to Margate and spent the day digging through vintage.

And when I say vintage, I don’t mean a T-shirt from Zara’s 2022 collection that somebody has decided is now archive.

I’m talking clothes that have already lived.

Pieces from different brands, years and eras. Clothes somebody designed, somebody bought, somebody wore, somebody eventually gave away and which somehow survived long enough for two women to find them in Margate decades later and start imagining another life for them.

That’s where it gets exciting.

You take what already exists.

You look at the construction, the fabric, the history, the details worth saving.

Then you ask,

What could this become now?

Rickylee does this through her own creative work, and it’s something we’ve explored through What’s Worth Wearing because we’re fascinated by the people who can look at something the rest of us might dismiss as finished and see raw material instead.

That, to me, is upcycling.

Not necessarily making something look old.

Making something old matter again.

And there is a difference.

An important one.

Especially now.

Since 19 July this year, large companies in the EU have been prohibited from destroying unsold clothing, accessories and footwear except under limited exemptions. The rules specifically push businesses toward keeping products in use through routes including resale, donation, repair, refurbishment and remanufacturing.

Which I think is brilliant.

But it also means words around circularity are only going to become more valuable in fashion.

And whenever something becomes valuable in marketing, we need to start paying attention to the difference between doing the thing and looking like you’re doing the thing.

Now, to be fair to Zara, I haven’t found them actually claiming that this collection is upcycled.

And that’s important.

The project is described as Galliano “re-authoring” Zara’s archive. Zara’s own collection page calls it Re{form}, and coverage of Galliano’s process makes clear that existing garments were the starting point for designs ultimately made in new materials.

So perhaps the interesting question isn’t:

Is Zara lying?

I don’t think that’s the useful accusation here.

The question I’m much more interested in is:

When the visual language of sustainability becomes fashionable, how easily do we start confusing the appearance of circularity with circularity itself?

Because those aren’t the same thing.

And consumers shouldn’t need a degree in textile manufacturing and three hours of investigative journalism before buying a skirt to understand the difference.

If it’s new, tell me it’s new.

If it’s inspired by an archive, wonderful. Tell me that.

If it’s made from deadstock, tell me.

If you’ve rescued an existing garment, dismantled it and turned THAT MATERIAL into something new, tell me.

I’ll probably love you for it.

Just don’t put a distressed hem on a newly manufactured skirt and expect Mother Earth to start clapping.

And perhaps this is also why I keep becoming more interested in independent designers, makers, vintage dealers and the people Rickylee and I are trying to discover through What’s Worth Wearing.

Because when you actually meet the person making the thing, you can ask:

Where did this come from?

What was it before?

Why did you make it this way?

What happened to the material?

And suddenly sustainability stops being a lovely paragraph written by a marketing department.

It becomes a process you can actually see.

So yes, Zara, I still love you.

I’m Spanish, it’s complicated 🇪🇸

And Galliano’s collection is visually fascinating.

I might even want half of it.

Which is deeply inconvenient for the argument I’m currently making(although it’s being a very long time since I bought a new addition to my wardrobe).

But maybe that’s precisely the point.

Something can be beautiful, creative, desirable and culturally interesting…

and we can still ask better questions about what it actually is.

Because a garment that looks upcycled isn’t necessarily upcycled.

A collection inspired by an archive isn’t necessarily circular.

And sustainability isn’t a design aesthetic.

At least, I hope it isn’t becoming one.

I was supposed to be working today, but a job got cancelled, which means my day looks absolutely nothing like the one I had planned.

And because I’m a self-employed woman with two children, a business, another creative project, and approximately 47 things I should probably be doing, you’d think I’d use this unexpected free time to catch up on my emails.

Naturally, I’ve decided to have an existential crisis instead.

I’m also feeling hormonal, so there’s that.

Anyway, I’m turning 40 in December.

FORTY.

And strangely, I’ve never felt more comfortable AND confident in my own skin.

A few days ago, I was asked to do an interview about reinvention in midlife by . There were lots of questions about identity, confidence and how we present ourselves to the world. Very much my territory. I’m a personal stylist. I talk about this stuff for a living.

But while I was answering them, I kept coming back to one thing.

We talk SO much about authenticity.

Authentic leadership. Authentic personal brands. Authentic style. Showing up as your authentic self.

Even authenticity has become something we’re supposed to be good at.

And I started wondering whether, in our attempt to be authentic, we’ve somehow managed to turn that into another performance.

Because who actually decides if we’re being authentic?

Us?

The people watching us?

Instagram?

The woman we follow online who wakes up at 5am, journals, drinks something green and apparently hasn’t had a bad thought since 2019?

At what point did being ourselves become something we needed to demonstrate?

And more importantly … what are we performing for?

Because if I need you to look at my life and think, God, Carolina is so authentic, then surely I’ve missed the bloody point.

Maybe authenticity isn’t about showing people more of ourselves.

Maybe it’s about needing their approval less.

And that thought has stayed with me.

Because I know how I come across.

I’m the woman who gets dressed, puts on her lipstick, walks into a room and generally looks like she knows exactly what she’s doing.

And most of the time, I do.

I love my life. I love my work. I love being a mother. And I genuinely love the woman I see in the mirror.

Actually, can we talk about that for a second?

I look AMAZING.

There. I said it :)

I’m almost 40 and I’ve never loved my reflection more than I do now.

But on Monday I spent almost two hours listening to sad songs and crying.

Both things are true.

Sometimes I also wish I had someone beside me to hold me really tight. Not because I need a man to complete me. I’ve built a life on my own that I’m incredibly proud of.

But there have been plenty of moments over the last few years when I would have loved someone to say, “I’ve got this one. You sit down.”

I didn’t have that, so I got very good at having myself.

I’m proud of that.

I’m also not interested in pretending it means I never want to be held.

And then, because apparently life enjoys timing…

Last Thursday, a very handsome doctor stopped me on the Tube.

My immediate instinct was to do what any London woman does when a stranger approaches her, pretend I’m on a call or suddenly lose the ability to speak English.

Then I looked at him.

Very handsome.

Okay. Maybe I speak English.

We went on a date. We had a fantastic time, went to a comedy show, talked for hours.

Very cinematic.

He’s 26.

I’m still processing that particular detail.

And actually, maybe that’s part of what turning 40 is making me notice.

How many ideas I’ve carried about what a woman approaching 40 is supposed to look like. How she’s supposed to feel. What she should have figured out by now. Whether she should want a relationship or celebrate being alone. Whether she should be ambitious or content. Sexy or serious. Confident enough not to need reassurance but vulnerable enough to be authentic.

It’s exhausting.

So, where do the clothes come into all of this?

I promise I haven’t forgotten this is supposed to be a newsletter about style.

But here’s something I’ve been thinking about.

We do with our wardrobes what we sometimes do with our lives. We dress for the woman we think we should be rather than the woman we actually are.

The cooler woman. The more successful woman. The woman who apparently has somewhere fabulous to go every Friday night.

And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look beautiful, polished or powerful. I love dressing up. I love a good outfit.

What I don’t love is the idea that we have to keep that performance going even when nobody’s watching.

I want to wear the beautiful dress because I love it, not because I need people to think my life is beautiful.

And I want to be able to take it off, sit on my sofa, cry to a sad song, and not feel like I’ve somehow failed at being the confident woman I was that morning.

They’re both me.

Anyway, I’m nearly 40.

And I think I’m getting a little bored of performing.

Not because I’ve got everything figured out. I have no idea what the next decade will look like, whether I’ll find the man I want to share my life with, or where my business will take me.

But I know I don’t want to spend another decade trying to make my life look a particular way.

I’d rather live it.

And maybe that’s where I’ve landed with all this talk about authenticity.

If I need someone else to recognise that I’m being authentic, I’m still performing for an audience.

Maybe being authentic is simply living your life without constantly checking how it looks from the outside.

I was actually supposed to publish something completely different last week. It’s called Being Pretty Is a Feeling, and it’s about how the features we criticise most can become the very things that make our style unmistakably ours.

I wrote it, I liked it, and for some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to hit publish.

I’ll share it next week, I promise.

But today, this is what I wanted to tell you.

Maybe it’s the interview. Maybe it’s turning 40. Maybe it’s the hormones.

Probably all three.

And if you’re reading this feeling wonderfully confident about your life but also slightly sad, lonely, overwhelmed or simply in need of a good cry, I hope you know you don’t have to pick a side.

I've also just come back from Spain, which I need to talk about for a second because this summer was different. I have a complicated relationship with going home, anyone who has parents and a childhood bedroom and a family that operates at a specific emotional frequency will understand this without me having to explain further. My usual pattern has been… arrive, last approximately one month, flee in a state of low-grade panic making promises to myself about next year, and then find myself back there the following summer doing the exact same thing. This time I cracked something open. I stayed. I actually stayed, past the point where I usually bolt, and instead of surviving it I somehow started savouring it. Every morning like it might be the last one. Which sounds dramatic but actually just felt like being present for something I'd been half-absent from for years.

I want to share so much more of what I learned about myself this summer. But my Substack is about fashion - and more specifically about the thing underneath fashion, which is identity, and how we wear it - so let me tell you what all of this has to do with your wardrobe.

There is a very specific feeling that happens in transition periods, and if you've ever experienced it you'll recognise it immediately, you open your wardrobe and nothing feels right. Something has changed in you, and the clothes haven't caught up yet. You're standing there in the clothes of the person you were three weeks ago, sun-soaked, unscheduled, operating on holiday logic where a linen dress and the same pair of sandals every day felt not just acceptable but actually perfect, and now you're supposed to walk back into your real life, the meetings and the school runs and the emails and the version of yourself that other people need you to be, and the wardrobe is offering you nothing useful. Everything feels like the wrong answer to a question you can't quite articulate.

This is not a YOU problem. This is a transition problem. And it happens because most wardrobes are organised around two modes - holiday and not holiday, relaxed and structured, summer and everything else - with nothing in between. No bridge or formula for the exact moment you're in right now, which is not quite either thing.

Here's what actually helps, and I want to be specific because vague advice about ‘building a capsule’ is not going to get you out of the door feeling like yourself on a Thursday in September.

The first thing is to stop trying to feel ready before you get dressed. You won't. Transition periods feel wrong partly because you're waiting for the internal shift to happen before you make the external one, and it almost never works in that order. The clothes come first. You dress the person you're moving toward, not the person you're still half-being. This is method dressing in its most practical form, not a mood board exercise, just the daily decision to dress for the chapter you're entering rather than the one you're leaving.

The second thing is formulas. Not outfits, not rules ok!? but formulas. A formula is a combination that works so reliably you can reach for it without thinking, which is exactly what you need when your brain is still somewhere between the terrace you were sitting on last week and the school WhatsApp group that has already sent fourteen messages this morning. For September specifically, the formula that works for almost every woman I've worked with is, one summer piece kept in play, anchored by something with structure. A holiday dress with a blazer. A linen shirt tucked into tailored trousers. The sandals you lived in all August, worn with something that says you're back. You're not abandoning summer entirely. You're just giving it a frame. It immediately feels more intentional, and intentional is how you get from standing paralysed in front of the wardrobe to actually leaving the house feeling like yourself.

The third thing - and this is the one that makes the biggest difference long term - is to actually look at what you own right now, in this season, with fresh eyes. Not the eyes of the woman who packed for Spain in June. The eyes of the woman who just came back having learned something she didn't know before. Because she might find that things she'd written off actually work. That combinations she never tried make complete sense now. That her wardrobe has more in it than she remembered, if she's willing to look at it as the person she currently is rather than the person who bought everything in it.

This is exactly the kind of work I'm doing with clients right now - going into wardrobes at the start of this new season, which is the real new season, and finding what's already there. My first client of the new season is thirteen years old. Her dad booked the session, not because she's spoiled, actually the opposite. She has no idea where to start, and before anyone bought her another bag of clothes that wouldn't work together, someone decided to ask a professional first. Which is, frankly, the wisest thing I've heard all summer :)

Welcome back. It's the real new year. Dress accordingly.

Which is inconvenient, because it means the fix isn’t a thought. It’s a rep.

I bring this up because I watch women avoid this exact math with their wardrobes constantly. Not because they don’t care. Because caring would mean looking directly at something, and looking directly at something is the one move nobody wants to make.

So instead, they hide behind reasons. And the reasons are good. That’s the trick, they’re not lazy excuses, they’re airtight little alibis.

“I don’t have anywhere to wear it.” As if a life has to justify itself to a dress before the dress is allowed to be worn.

“I’ll deal with this when I lose the weight / get the promotion / move / turn a corner.” As if the wardrobe is a reward waiting at the end of a personality renovation, instead of a tool that could actually help you get there faster.

“I don’t want to be extra.” Which is often just “I don’t want to be looked at,” dressed up as modesty.

“I already spent so much money, I should just work with what I have.” Said by someone standing in front of eleven items she hasn’t worn in a year.

None of these are about clothes. They’re about visibility. About what it would mean to actually show up as the version of yourself that isn’t hiding. And that’s uncomfortable in a way no amount of shopping fixes, because shopping is still avoidance, it’s just avoidance with a bag in your hand. New clothes on top of an old identity is still an old identity. You can buy a completely new wardrobe and still get dressed like someone who’s apologizing for existing, because the clothes were never actually the variable.

Here’s the part that annoys people when I say it out loud: this is programming. Not a metaphor, an actual pattern, running quietly, making decisions for you before you’ve consciously made any decision at all. You didn’t choose to reach for the shapeless thing in the back. Some earlier version of you decided that was safer, and nobody’s gone back to check if that’s still true.

And no amount of money changes that. I’ve dressed women with extraordinary budgets who dress like they’re trying not to be caught, and women with four good pieces who look like they own the room. The wardrobe was never the tell. The programming was.

So if you want the confidence, the actual kind, the kind that isn’t a Tuesday feeling, it’s not going to come from a better mood. It’s going to come from doing the rep. Putting on the thing. Standing in the mirror a beat longer than feels comfortable. Making it a decision instead of a reflex.

That’s the whole method, honestly. Not more clothes. Fewer places left to hide.

If any of those excuses sounded familiar, that’s not an accident, it’s the pattern. And you can’t out-shop a pattern you haven’t named yet.

Three minutes. No mood board required. Just a straight answer on what you’ve actually been hiding behind, so the next thing you buy, or don’t buy, is a decision instead of a reflex.

I look at what’s already hanging in their wardrobe and I can tell them, in one session, exactly what to wear tomorrow, what to stop buying, and what’s been sitting there for three years waiting for someone to explain what it’s actually for.

And here’s the part people don’t expect, I’m not sending them to buy five new things to make that one piece work. I’m building four, five, six different outfits out of what’s already there. One skirt becomes a dinner look, a work look, a Sunday look. Same piece, completely different woman wearing it each time. That’s the actual skill. Not more clothes. More ways to use the ones you have.

I can see shit fast.

You bring me the skirt you’ve owned for a decade and never known how to wear, and I can hear the top that finally makes it make sense.

You bring me the “I need a whole new wardrobe” panic, and I’m looking at the four pieces you already own that solve half of it.

You tell me you don’t know your style, and I’m watching what you keep reaching for anyway, because you already know, you just haven’t been given permission to trust it.

You think you have a shopping problem. I can see you actually have a decision problem. You don’t need more clothes. You need someone to stand in the wardrobe with you and say… that one. Because it’s you, not trendy.

That’s where months collapse into minutes.

I’m looking for the one piece that changes everything else in that wardrobe.

And I don’t stop at telling you what to wear. Because knowing what looks good and actually feeling like yourself in it are two very different things.

That’s where working with me directly gets really good.

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that because it is the exact opposite of how most women get dressed in the morning.

Most women get dressed in reaction. To the weather, the meeting, the mood, the laundry situation, the low-grade feeling that they don’t quite look the part, even though nobody has ever clearly defined what the part is, and it keeps changing anyway. Getting dressed becomes this daily negotiation with no script and no clear answer, and it’s exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain because from the outside it just looks like a woman standing in front of a full wardrobe saying she has nothing to wear. Which is its own kind of embarrassing. Which makes it worse.

What if it started from the other direction?

There’s something called method dressing that’s been finding its way into fashion conversations lately. The idea is borrowed from acting, you dress not for the occasion but for the character. Not the character you’re performing for other people. The one you’re in the middle of becoming. Actors don’t start with the costume. They start with the person. What does she believe? What has she survived? What does she want so badly she’d never say it out loud? The clothes come from that. Not the other way around.

This is what I keep coming back to with clients. Because the most interesting thing that ever happens in a wardrobe edit, and I’ve done enough of them now to say this with some confidence, is never really about the clothes. It’s about the question underneath the clothes. And that question is almost always the same: who am I now? And does what I own actually reflect her?

Sometimes the answer is no because the wardrobe belongs to a previous chapter. The woman who built her career in her thirties, dressed for that version of herself - structured, armoured, quietly authoritative - and is now in her forties wanting something completely different. Something that actually feels like her rather than a role she’s grown out of. But the old clothes still fit, and getting rid of them feels wasteful, and she’s busy, so she keeps them. And every morning she opens the wardrobe and feels vaguely unsupported by everything she owns and can’t quite explain why.

Sometimes the wardrobe belongs to a chapter that hasn’t started yet. The event that never happened. The body that’s still coming. The life that’s perpetually about three months away from beginning properly. And sometimes, this is the one that stays with me, the woman has already changed completely. She knows who she is now. She just hasn’t told her wardrobe yet.

Method dressing in real life isn’t about doing what Zendaya does at a press tour, though she does it better than almost anyone and it’s worth paying attention to for that reason (with the help and great vision of her stylist Law Roach). It’s a much quieter practice. It’s asking, before you open the wardrobe, who you are actually dressing today. Not who you were. Not who someone else needs you to be. Who you are in this specific chapter, with what this chapter is actually asking of you.

What does the woman building something from scratch wear on the days she doesn’t quite believe in herself yet? What does the woman who just came out the other side of something hard wear when she’s ready to stop dressing like someone in recovery and start dressing like someone who made it through? What does the woman falling in love wear, not to attract someone, but to remind herself who she is before anyone else’s perception gets involved?

These are not small questions. And they have almost nothing to do with what’s in season.

Patricia Field knew this. She didn’t ask what Carrie would wear because it was fashionable. She asked who Carrie was. The clothes followed. That’s why they lasted.

The work I do is the real life version of that conversation. We go into the wardrobe not to find what’s missing but to find who’s there. What the clothes already know about the woman wearing them. What chapter they belong to and whether that chapter is still hers. And almost every time, what we find is that she already has what she needs. She just hasn’t been asked the right questions yet.

This is not an accident.

The fashion industry… and I include in this the algorithm, the influencers, the brands, the magazines that have migrated to Substack and are now doing the exact same thing but in a longer format with better typography, has one fundamental interest, and it is not your self-expression. It is your self-doubt.

A woman who feels clear about who she is and what she likes is a woman who buys considerably less. She is, from a commercial perspective, a problem. The entire system depends on you remaining slightly uncertain, behind, and in need of the next thing that will finally make it click.

So it gives you a rotating cast of selves to aspire toward, and changes the lineup just often enough that you never quite arrive.

There is the body version of this, which is perhaps the most violent. I watch a woman on my screen, she is beautiful in the way that requires significant infrastructure and a ring light, me that she has finally found the pieces that work for her body, by which she means the body she has spent considerable energy and money producing. The implication, delivered with complete warmth and zero self-awareness, is that the clothes are the reward for having the right body first. That fit is something you earn. I go to the supermarket afterward and spend four minutes reading the protein content on a yoghurt I have bought every week for three years, because apparently the body I currently inhabit is a rough draft, and the clothes I want to wear are waiting on the other side of 150 grams of daily protein and six Lagree classes and whatever cortisol supplement just went viral on the wellness side of the algorithm, which has clocked that I am a woman in my thirties and has decided I am afraid of my own hormones.

Then there is the life version, which is subtler and in some ways more interesting. Women buy clothes for lives they do not currently live. I know this because I open wardrobes for a living, and what I find, consistently, is a kind of autobiographical fiction rendered in fabric. There is the section for the woman who goes to more events. The silk that’s waiting for the right occasion, which has been coming since 2019. The holiday pieces that have only ever seen the inside of a suitcase, then a wardrobe, then a suitcase again, unworn, because the version of herself that wears them, relaxed, sunlit, completely at ease, doesn’t quite exist in her actual daily life, and she can’t quite bring herself to admit that yet. The clothes are a promissory note. One day I will be the woman these things belong to.

And then there is the other people version, which is the one nobody talks about because it requires a level of honesty that is genuinely uncomfortable. Most women, if they sit with it long enough, will admit that a significant portion of their wardrobe was purchased in response to something external. A new job. A person they wanted to impress. A version of themselves they felt they were supposed to project in a specific context. A comment someone made once, years ago, that lodged somewhere and quietly became a dressing rule. The clothes are not self-expression. They are a negotiation with an imagined audience, conducted every single morning, mostly below the level of conscious thought.

What I find, every time, without exception, in every wardrobe I have ever worked in, is that the woman standing in front of me already knows who she is. The knowing is in there. It shows up in what she reaches for when she’s not thinking about it, what she feels most like herself in, what she’s kept for twenty years despite every clear-out. The disconnection is not a personality deficit. It is a product. It has been manufactured and maintained and delivered to her phone in an extremely compelling format, daily, for years.

The work I do is not about adding anything. It’s about removing enough noise that she can hear what was already true.

You already know what you like. You’ve just been given a lot of very well-produced reasons to doubt it.

Which is this.

The most interesting people to look at have accumulated something over time that cannot be purchased in a single session. References, curiosity, and a point of view that was built slowly, through the films they watched and the cities they lived in and the artists they fell for and the meals they ate in places that changed something in them, even slightly.

Pierre Bourdieu called it cultural capital, the knowledge, sensibilities and experiences a person accumulates over a lifetime, the invisible inheritance of everything they’ve absorbed. He was thinking about class and social distinction, which is interesting but not what I care about here.

What fascinates me is something much quieter, the way a person’s inner world, when they’ve actually been paying attention to it, starts to show up in the way they dress. Not consciously, or as a costume, just as a coherence. You look at them and think… this person knows who they are. And you’re right, though probably not because of the clothes.

After editing well over a hundred wardrobes, I’ve started noticing the same thing over and over again. The women with the most interesting style rarely own the most clothes. They almost always have the richest references. The ones who know exactly why they love a particular film, why they keep returning to the same neighbourhood whenever they travel, why one café feels more like them than another. None of that feels related to getting dressed until suddenly… it does.

The problem with how most women approach their wardrobe, and I say this with complete tenderness because I have done it too, is that the references come from outside. Trends, algorithms, the influencer whose aesthetic you’ve been quietly absorbing for two years without realising it. Those references aren’t wrong exactly. But they’re not yours either. And clothes built entirely on borrowed references produce outfits that are correct without being interesting, technically fine, but could also belong to anyone.

The alternative isn’t to stop looking outward. It’s to have enough of an interior world that when something outside catches your attention, you actually know why.

What stayed with me afterwards wasn’t that he was fashionable.

He wasn’t trying to be.

What fascinated me was that, listening to him speak, I realised I wasn’t really looking at his clothes. I was looking at fifty years of references.

Italy was still there, in the way he values quality, in the details he notices, in the way he carries himself. London has left its marks too. The edges, the eclecticism, the slight unpredictability. The openness to collect influences without ever losing himself inside them.

He dresses like someone who has spent decades paying attention to his own life.

And somehow…

…you can see it.

That’s what I mean by cultural capital made visible.

Not wearing your influences literally.

Not recreating someone else’s Pinterest board.

Just allowing the slow accumulation of a life genuinely lived and genuinely noticed to quietly find its way into the way you get dressed every morning.

But I also want to leave you with something practical because I don’t want this to stay as an interesting theory.

Instead of asking yourself,

“What should I buy next?”

Try asking yourself something completely different.

“What have I been collecting all these years that has nothing to do with clothes?”

Every stylish person I’ve ever admired has left clues behind.

Usually in the same places.

The films they watch again and again.

The music they always return to.

The restaurants they recommend without hesitation.

The books with folded pages.

The cities they never quite stop talking about.

The exhibitions they still remember years later.

None of those things are random.

Eventually a thread starts appearing.

Maybe you’re always drawn to clean architecture, muted colours and quiet spaces. Maybe you keep choosing warm wood, old leather, handwritten menus and jazz bars without ever realising you’ve been making the same aesthetic decision for twenty years.

That’s far more interesting than whether burgundy is trending this autumn.

The creative part isn’t collecting more inspiration.

It’s recognising what all your references already have in common and letting that become the foundation of your wardrobe.

You’re not dressing like a character.

You’re asking yourself a much better question.

What is it about this that moves me… and how could that feeling exist inside something I wear?

Look at someone like The Row’s founders, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Their wardrobes don’t feel recognisable because they’re following trends. They feel recognisable because decades of references, art, architecture, travel, restraint, proportion, have slowly become one visual language.

Or think about Phoebe Philo. Women didn’t just copy her clothes. They copied the feeling her work gave them: intelligence, ease, confidence without performance.

That’s the difference.

One is fashion.

The other is a point of view.

That’s the wardrobe I’m interested in helping women build.

Not a bigger one.

A more inhabited one.

One that reflects an actual person who has actually lived, rather than a collection of correct answers to questions someone else was asking.

You already have more references than you think.

You’ve just never been invited to use them.

Here is what I find genuinely funny, in a way that is also slightly tragic. Almost every client I work with tells me the same thing before we start. Some version of… I don’t have much. It’s all quite old. I’m not sure you’ll have enough to work with. And I smile, because I’ve heard this exact sentence (this exact sentence, in this exact apologetic tone) more than a hundred and fifty times. And every single time, I open the wardrobe and find it full of clothes and sometimes even with the tags still on them.

Unworn, unloved, purchased with genuine intention and then quietly abandoned because by the time they arrived, the moment had passed, or the confidence had dipped, or a new thing had already appeared on the algorithm to make this thing feel slightly less like the answer. The clothes didn’t fail her, the idea that she needed to keep finding something new did.

Trends exist to make what you own feel expired.

This is what newness does, and I want to be very clear that newness is not an accident. It is a strategy.

Trends exist, and I say this as someone who has genuinely stopped talking about them because I find them almost entirely useless for the women I work with, trends exist to make what you own feel expired. To create the sensation that your wardrobe has a use-by date. That last season’s pieces are last season’s version of you, and surely you’ve grown, surely you deserve something that reflects who you are now, which is apparently someone who needs to spend money to prove it. It is an extraordinarily effective system. It works on almost everyone. And the proof is in the tags still attached to the things hanging in your wardrobe right now.

Last week I did a session with a client who has become a proper friend, in her forties, works in marketing, full of natural sophistication and presence. She was nervous before I arrived. She told me afterward she’d been scared I’d open her wardrobe, look at what was in there, and say there’s nothing I can do with this. She was ready to step into the next version of herself. She just didn’t think her current wardrobe was going to get her there, because she couldn’t spot the patterns repeating in her wardrobe.

We put together thirty-something outfits. From what she already owned.

Some of the combinations we put together made no logical sense on paper, a holiday piece she’d only ever worn in thirty-degree heat, layered with a hoodie she used for working from home. A skirt that had only ever seen boardrooms ended up paired as a simple casual set for a Saturday. Evening pieces that had been waiting for the right occasion got pulled into daytime looks that actually had somewhere to go. All of it went into a ready-to-wear LookBook she now opens in the morning instead of standing in front of the rail wondering where to start. These were clothes she’d had for years, some of them for over a decade, all of them apparently not enough, right up until the moment someone actually looked at them properly.

Same pieces, different context… that’s the whole secret.

But here’s the part I keep thinking about. In the room, while I was telling her (genuinely, not in a professional encouragement voice) how good something looked, she couldn’t receive it. She heard me. She believed I meant it. She still couldn’t see it. It wasn’t until she watched the footage back that something settled. She sent a voice note to our community afterward and said she’d had to see the evidence before she could believe it. Before she could think… oh. That actually works. I do look like that.

We have lost the ability to trust our own eyes about ourselves. Someone else has to hold up the evidence before we believe it. And I think that’s the thing nobody is talking about when they talk about style, not the clothes, the trends, or the shopping. The fact that somewhere along the way, most women stopped being a reliable witness to themselves. Stopped trusting what they see in the mirror without external confirmation. Started needing a camera, a comment, a stylist, a stranger’s opinion to validate something they could have just… believed.

Wisdom is the glow up they can’t sell you. Freedom from whether or not someone finds you beautiful. The quiet, slightly boring, life-changing decision to look at what you already have - in your wardrobe, in yourself - and think, actually. This is more than enough.

A personal note before I go.

This week I needed to step back from the noise for a bit. What is happening in Venezuela has been sitting with me in a way I haven’t quite known what to do with, not in a way I can fix, but in the way that certain things cut through everything and remind you what is actually real. I’ve been thinking about how much energy we spend on things that feel urgent and aren’t, and how little on noticing what we already have. I can’t do much from here except speak up, give visibility to it from my platforms, pray, and try to live more intentionally, to honour the life I have rather than keep treating it like a rough draft.

That probably sounds strange at the end of a newsletter about personal style. But I think it’s the same thing, stop waiting, see what’s already there, look in the mirror and think you’re good, everything is probably not perfect, but make a decision to stop waiting for permission to believe it.

Lately, I’ve found myself posting less, talking less, generally spending less time worrying about whether I’ve shown up in all the places we’re apparently supposed to show up. It wasn’t intentional, life simply carried on, and somewhere in the middle of client sessions, workshops, school runs, and everything else that comes with being a single mother running a business, I stopped paying quite so much attention to the noise.

What surprised me was how much space that created.

I’m a woman with far too many opinions, endless observations, and a running commentary happening in my head at all times. I can turn a conversation about a pair of loafers into a discussion about identity, and spend twenty minutes explaining why someone’s favourite handbag probably says more about them than their LinkedIn profile. The ideas were never the issue. :)

There is a version of content creation that looks like contribution but is actually performance. Showing up consistently, hitting the right topics, editing everything so it lands well with the right people. I have been doing some of that…. and I am bored of it. Not of the work, of the performance around the work. There is a difference and I think most women reading this know exactly what I mean because they have been performing in some version of that same way for years.

A few weeks ago, I was hosting a styling session in Marylebone. I sat in a room with a group of senior executive women and we talked about wardrobes, identity, and what it actually means to dress like yourself rather than for the room you are walking into. And something about that evening made me stop and sit with a question I had been avoiding.

How much of what I put out into the world is actually mine, and how much of it is dressed up for approval?

I read Patricia Field’s book recently. She styled Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Emily in Paris. One of the most influential women in fashion for decades. And what came through on every page was not expertise or strategy or a method. It was complete and total indifference to what anyone else thought she should be doing. She was so entirely herself that the work became inevitable. Reading it did not inspire me. It gave me permission to recognise that I am already doing that. That the thing I have been moving toward is not somewhere ahead of me. I am already in it.

In six months I turn 40. I expected to feel some version of pressure about that. Instead I feel something closer to relief. Like the last few years have been slowly removing everything that was never really mine, the performing, the dressing for roles rather than for myself, the waiting for the right moment to say the thing I actually think. I stopped waiting. It feels extraordinarily free and slightly inconvenient for anyone expecting me to stay in a lane.

Here is what I actually believe about style, said plainly without the content wrapper around it. Most women do not have a wardrobe problem. But a self-knowledge problem. And they avoid solving it because looking honestly at what you wear means looking honestly at who you are presenting to the world, and sometimes that is uncomfortable.

Jennifer Aniston has essentially been wearing variations of the same outfit for decades (jeans, white tanks, simple tailoring, great hair, aviator glasses)… Nobody ever seems particularly bothered by the repetition. In fact, people admire it. Which I find fascinating because women spend an extraordinary amount of time worrying that they are boring, predictable, repetitive, not evolving enough, not changing enough. And yet one of the most consistently stylish women alive has spent thirty years looking almost exactly like herself.

I don’t think women come to me because they want more clothes. If that were true, Zara would have solved the problem years ago.

What they’re usually searching for is much harder to buy. They’re looking for that feeling of recognition. The relief of opening a wardrobe and seeing themselves instead of a collection of decisions made for different versions of their life.

That is what I want to help women find. Not a wardrobe that looks good. A wardrobe that is so completely theirs that getting dressed stops being a daily negotiation and starts being the least complicated thing in their day.

Because if it did work, just like that, most women wouldn’t be standing in front of full wardrobes every morning feeling like something is slightly… off, maybe not completely wrong, but not quite right either.

There’s a version of style advice that has become very popular lately.

“Dress how you feel.”

It sounds good and freeing, like the kind of thing that should solve everything in one sentence.

And to be fair, there is truth in it.

Clothing does affect how you feel. You know that the moment you put something on that just works and your whole posture changes without you even noticing.

But there’s a small detail that gets conveniently ignored.

You don’t feel the same every day.

Some days you wake up clear, decisive, and ready.

Other days you wake up and your brain feels like it’s buffering. You’re tired, slightly irritated, not entirely sure what version of yourself is required today.

Now imagine building your wardrobe decisions entirely around that.

“Dress how you feel.”

Fine.

Today I feel:

• slightly bloated

• mildly existential

• emotionally attached to my duvet

• and one inconvenient email away from rethinking my entire career

What exactly are we wearing for that?

This is where the advice starts to collapse.

Because if you dress purely based on how you feel, you end up reinforcing the very state you’re trying to move out of.

Low energy → low effort → clothes that don’t support you → you feel worse → repeat.

It’s not style, it’s a feedback loop.

And this is also where ‘effortless’ enters the chat.

Or at least the idea of it.

We love the word effortless. We use it like it’s the ultimate goal. As if somewhere out there there’s a version of dressing where everything just… happens.

No thinking, adjusting, or second-guessing.

Just a woman, in a perfect outfit, casually living her life.

I don’t think effortless exists.

I think some women just stopped overthinking because they made certain decisions in advance.

They removed variables.

They decided what works, what doesn’t, what belongs to them and what doesn’t.

And now it looks effortless from the outside.

But inside, it’s structured intentionally, and repeated enough times that it becomes instinct.

The same thing is happening with another trend I keep hearing about: dopamine dressing.

Wear bright colours. Wear something fun. Boost your mood through clothing.

Again, not wrong.

But also… incomplete.

Because dopamine dressing when you already feel good is one thing.

Dopamine dressing when you feel like absolute shit is another.

You don’t need a neon dress when your nervous system is already overwhelmed.

You don’t need more stimulation.

You need grounding.

Clarity.

Something that holds you, not something that performs for you.

And yet, what do most women do?

They go shopping.

Not because they need something.

Because they feel something.

• A bad week: “I deserve something new.”

• A confusing phase: “maybe I just need to refresh my wardrobe.”

• A moment of insecurity: “this might make me feel better.”

And for a few hours, it works.

Until the new piece enters the same wardrobe, under the same lack of clarity, and becomes part of the same problem.

So instead of asking:

“What do I feel like wearing today?”

A much better question is:

“What do I need today?”

They’re not the same.

And that tiny shift changes everything.

Because when you know what you need, you start editing.

You stop reacting.

You stop letting your mood dictate your wardrobe.

And you start using your wardrobe to support your life.

This is also why the ‘three words method’ works when it’s done properly.

Not as an aesthetic exercise.

Not as today I feel soft, feminine, Parisian.

But as a filter.

A way of deciding, in advance, what stays and what goes.

What belongs to you and what was just… a moment.

Effortless doesn’t come from dressing how you feel.

It comes from knowing what to remove before you even get dressed.

What most of these methods are trying to do,(and why they sometimes work), is point you in the right direction.

But none of them hold on their own.

Because without structure, every decision becomes reactive.

And this is the part most women skip, because it asks for something different.

It asks you to stop letting your mood lead every decision.

You feel something, you dress for it, you second-guess it, and the cycle repeats.

What actually makes any of this work is much quieter than that.

It’s knowing, in advance, what belongs to you.

What supports you.
What you reach for when you’re not thinking.
What consistently works, regardless of how you feel that day.

That’s where the ease comes from.

Not from dressing for your mood.

From removing the need to negotiate with it every morning.

Not just with skincare, supplements, protein powders, ergonomic desk chairs and the kind of water bottle that suggests both hydration and moral superiority. With clothes, obviously. Especially clothes. Because clothes have one enormous advantage over every other form of self-improvement: they arrive quickly, they look like progress, and for a brief moment they let you believe the problem has been identified and solved by 11:32am on a Tuesday.

I have a friend - brilliant, funny, earns more than most men she knows, which she mentions rarely but thinks about constantly - who keeps buying clothes for the woman she believes she is on the verge of becoming. Not a fantasy exactly. Just a slightly upgraded version of herself who apparently spends more time in silk shirts than WhatsApp groups, and whose life requires a rotation of tonal knitwear despite the fact she lives in a country where most of the year is one long argument with the weather. Her wardrobe is full. Genuinely full. Rails, boxes, “investment pieces,” shoes in dust bags, dresses waiting for the right occasion to redeem themselves. And she still tells me, with complete sincerity, that she has nothing to wear.

I’m not judging her. I’m describing myself with a different haircut.

We talk about the algorithm as though it happened to us, as though we were innocent bystanders in our own consumption. The app suggested it. The ad found me. The influencer was very convincing. But somewhere between twenty-three and now, I made a series of completely voluntary choices to outsource my sense of self to a rotating cast of objects, and the objects keep failing to deliver and I keep ordering more. There is a word for this. Several, actually. None of them are flattering.

The wardrobe version of this is particularly embarrassing, because it always arrives dressed as self-knowledge. You’re not shopping, you’re “refining your style.” You’re not impulse buying, you’re “building a capsule.” You’re not repeating the same pattern in a fresh neutral, you’re “investing in elevated basics.” Meanwhile, your fourth cream blazer is entering the house like a new political candidate promising structural change, and by Sunday evening you’re standing half-dressed in front of the mirror, feeling exactly the same as before, except now with better tailoring and a lower bank balance.

Here is what nobody tells you about being a woman in the last year of her thirties who is, by any reasonable metric, doing fine… the noise gets louder, not quieter. You would think that by now, with the career, the therapy, the increasingly low tolerance for uncomfortable shoes and other people’s projections, you might have developed some immunity. But the machine has studied you for years. It knows exactly when to offer reinvention disguised as practicality. It knows you are tired. It knows you want ease. It knows you will respond to phrases like “timeless,” “effortless,” “French,” “soft power,” and “quiet luxury” as if they are not just aesthetic suggestions but solutions to a life you are trying to hold together with some dignity.

And because women are very resourceful, we do what we always do: we become excellent at adapting. We can dress for the meeting, the school run, the date, the lunch, the life we have, the life we want, the life we briefly saw on Pinterest and decided we might be able to approximate if we found the right trousers. We become women with range. Women who can do polished, relaxed, feminine, minimal, confident, understated, creative, classic, elevated, effortless. Which sounds impressive until you realise that range is often what develops when no strong point of view has been allowed to harden.

That, to me, is where the real problem begins.

Because most women I work with do not need more clothes. They need a clearer opinion. Not about trends. Not about what’s flattering in the most superficial sense. About themselves. About who they are now, what their life actually asks of them, what they’re no longer available for, what they want their clothes to hold, communicate, protect, or stop apologising for.

Instead, they buy in fragments. A jacket for the competent version of themselves. A dress for the spontaneous version. A co-ord for the woman who definitely books better holidays than they do. Shoes for a social life that has been “coming back properly” since 2019. And because none of these purchases are being made from one coherent point of view, the wardrobe becomes a holding pen for multiple selves who do not speak to each other.

This is why women end up with wardrobes that look abundant and feel useless. Not because they lack taste. Usually the opposite. The pieces are often good. Expensive, even. Chosen with genuine desire. But desire without structure is just accumulation with a prettier backstory.

There’s a kind of pain point I see over and over again, especially in women between their late thirties and mid-fifties, and it has almost nothing to do with fashion in the way people think. It’s the exhaustion of having enough and still feeling unsupported by what you own. It’s opening a wardrobe full of options and feeling no sense of relief. It’s realising that every new purchase has been trying to answer a question you still haven’t asked properly. Not “what should I wear?” but “who am I dressing for now?” And, more uncomfortably, “what am I still trying to prove?”

The answer is rarely aesthetic. It’s emotional. Women keep buying because buying lets them postpone the harder decision, which is to become more definite. More honest. Less available for every possible version of themselves. Because once you decide who you are, a lot of things stop being options. And that can feel, at first, like a loss. In reality it is the beginning of taste.

A strong wardrobe is not built by someone with endless options. It is built by someone with a strong enough opinion to refuse most of them.

That opinion does not come from another haul, another “must-have,” another woman’s morning routine, another woman’s body, another woman’s Substack, another woman’s life. It comes from sitting still long enough to notice what keeps repeating. What you buy when you feel uncertain. What you reach for when you want to disappear. What you save for later because you still believe a better version of you is coming to deserve it.

The irony, of course, is that ease only begins once something is no longer up for discussion. When you know what belongs, what doesn’t, what supports you, what distracts you, what was purchased for a fantasy, what was purchased from fear, and what actually earns its place in your life. Then the wardrobe gets quieter. Faster. More useful. Less emotional. You stop asking it to rescue your identity and start allowing it to reflect one.

You don’t need more options. You need a stronger opinion about why you keep buying them.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a post from Eshita Kabra announcing her pregnancy.

It was beautiful news. The kind of thing that should feel simple, joyful, almost obvious. And yet the first line stayed with me longer than anything else. She said that many ambitious women find it difficult to share what is meant to be very happy news.

I remember pausing there for a moment, because it’s such a quiet sentence, but it carries something underneath it that feels heavier than it should.

Why is that still true?

That same week, something slightly unexpected happened Tiffanie Darke, whose writing I’ve followed for a while, particularly her ‘rule of five’ approach to consumption, reached out and asked if I would be open to a short interview about ‘life editing.’ No context, no preparation, just a quick call. I said yes without thinking too much about it, which in hindsight was probably the best way to approach it.

I joined the call already a bit tired. It was one of those days that start early and don’t really give you space to arrive anywhere fully. Kids on holidays, clients, volunteering day at SmartWorks, everything happening at once. You move through it, but your mind is still catching up. And because of that, I didn’t prepare anything. I didn’t think about what I was going to say, or how I should sound. I just showed up.

At some point she asked me about my comment on Eshita’s post, motherhood and work, and how it changes things. And I realised, while she was asking the question, that I didn’t really have a clean answer, because I don’t think it works in a clean way.

I had my first child when I was 23. I didn’t know what I was doing. I was still trying to understand myself, let alone another human being. There was no strategy behind it, no sense of timing, no idea of how this would fit into a career later on. Life just happened.

And for a long time, I tried to organise it in a way that made sense. I separated things. My work over here. My children over there. My personal life somewhere else. Trying to find balance by keeping everything slightly apart, as if that would make it easier to manage.

Only a couple of years ago I started to see that the separation was the thing that made it harder.

Because it creates this quiet feeling that parts of your life need to take turns existing. That you can be one thing now, and another thing later, and maybe (if everything goes well) you’ll eventually find a way to bring it all together.

What I have always resisted, though, even without fully realising it, is the idea of becoming just one version of myself. Just the mother. Just the professional. Just the woman who holds everything together quietly.

There has always been something in me that wanted all of it to stay alive at the same time. Not perfectly, or in balance all the time. But present.

I’ve always found it interesting, the way we talk about children as something that might affect our careers, as if they take something away.

That hasn’t been my experience. If anything, it has done the opposite.

Not in a polished, easy to explain way, but in the way life forces you to grow. To make decisions faster. To understand what matters. To hold more than one thing at once.

Things that, whether we say it or not, shape how you move professionally as well.

And yet, when I look around, I see how often we are still negotiating that. Not openly, but in small decisions. What we share. What we don’t. What we tone down. What we delay.

Even something as simple as announcing a pregnancy can become something that requires consideration, timing, almost justification.

It made me realise how much of our lives we are still editing. Not because we don’t know who we are, but because we are trying to make that version acceptable.

Acceptable at work. Acceptable socially. Acceptable in a way that doesn’t disrupt the image we think we’re supposed to maintain.

And the more I think about it, the more exhausting that feels.

Because there is no version of this that works perfectly. You can have children early and it will be questioned. You can have them later and it will be questioned. You can prioritise your career and something will feel out of place. You can prioritise your personal life and something else will feel compromised.

There is always something.

So at some point, it stops being about finding the right way to do it, and it becomes a decision. A quiet one, but a very clear one. To stop waiting. To stop editing yourself into something more acceptable. To stop asking for permission to live your life in the way that makes sense to you.

And this doesn’t just show up in life decisions.

It shows up in something much smaller, and much more daily.

In your wardrobe.

In the way you get dressed in the morning.

In the hesitation before wearing something that feels a little more like you. In the way you adjust it, soften it, bring it back into a range that feels acceptable. In the quiet question that sits underneath it all - is this too much? is this appropriate? am I allowed to look like this?

Clothing is one of the first places where that need for permission becomes visible.

Because what you wear is not just about clothes. It’s about how much of yourself you’re willing to show without negotiating it down first.

And most women are still editing there too.

Softening and simplifying themselves. Making themselves easier to read, easier to accept.

Until, at some point, you realise you’re doing the same thing everywhere, and it stops being about finding the right way to do it.

And it becomes a decision, a very clear one.

To stop waiting.

To stop editing yourself into a version that feels easier for everyone else to understand.

To stop asking for permission to live your life in the way that makes sense to you.

Because, truth is, no one is going to come and tell you that now is the perfect moment.

That this version of you is the right one.

That everything aligns and makes sense and has been approved.

That moment doesn’t exist.

What does exist is the choice to stop adjusting constantly.

To let the different parts of your life exist together, even if it feels messy, even if it doesn’t look the way you imagined it would.

To accept that there isn’t one clean version of you that replaces all the others, but many that need to coexist.

And maybe that’s what that sentence was really pointing to.

Not the difficulty of sharing good news.

But the weight of feeling like you need to explain why your life looks the way it does.

At some point, it becomes simpler to just… not.

I came across something Tony Robbins said recently, and it stayed with me far longer than I expected. He talks about the six human needs that drive everything we do (certainty, variety, significance, love, growth, contribution), and how every decision we make is, in some way, an attempt to meet them.

It sounds abstract until you start noticing where it shows up in real life.

For example, in front of your wardrobe.

There’s a very particular moment most women recognise immediately, you’re standing there, nothing is technically wrong, you have options, you’ve worn these clothes before, and yet something doesn’t land. You hesitate, you change once, twice, maybe three times, and eventually you reach for the outfit that has never betrayed you. The one that moves you through the day without questions, without attention, without friction.

You call it being practical. But what you’ve actually chosen is certainty.

And it happens in seconds. Quietly. Without you even noticing you’ve just made a decision about how visible you’re allowed to be that day.

A few days later, often without planning to, you see someone who carries herself differently. Not louder, not more dressed up, just more decided. And there’s a quiet recognition that has very little to do with her and everything to do with you, the version of you that feels just slightly out of reach.

So you try again. You put something on that feels closer to that version, and almost immediately you begin adjusting it. You soften it, you edit it down, you bring it back into a range that feels acceptable. Because as much as you want to be seen, you also want to belong, and that tension is where most wardrobes quietly fall apart.

This is where the conversation usually goes wrong.

We’ve been taught to diagnose this as a style issue, or a lack of discipline, or a need to shop better, when in reality it’s much closer to a misalignment of needs. You are trying to feel safe, and seen, and connected, and evolving, all at once, using clothes that were never chosen with those intentions in mind.

So one outfit leans too heavily into certainty and disappears. Another leans too heavily into significance and feels performative. Another chases variety and ends up disconnected from your actual life. And somewhere in between, you start to believe the problem is you.

What Robbins articulates, and what I see every day in my work, is that people don’t lack motivation. They lack awareness of what is driving their behaviour. Once you see it, everything becomes cleaner.

The woman who wears black every day is not boring; she is protecting her need for certainty (and probably saving herself ten decisions before 9am). The woman who keeps buying new pieces is not inconsistent; she is chasing variety without structure. The woman who saves her best outfits is not disorganised; she is negotiating her sense of significance. The woman who tones herself down is not lacking confidence; she is prioritising connection over visibility.

When those needs are met unconsciously, your wardrobe becomes a collection of compromises. When they are met deliberately, it becomes a system. That is the difference.

This is why I don’t start with trends or aesthetics, or even finding your style in the way it’s usually framed. I start with understanding what your life actually demands of you, and how you need to feel within it, because only then can you build something that holds you properly. A wardrobe that gives you certainty without shrinking you, variety without chaos, significance without performance, connection without self-abandonment, growth without confusion, and contribution without exhaustion.

Getting dressed was never just about clothes. It has always been about the quiet decisions you make about who you are allowed to be, and under what conditions. When those decisions are made on purpose, everything else becomes simpler in a way that feels almost surprising.

Looking good is easy. Feeling aligned is where things finally start to change.

If you’re in that space where your wardrobe technically works, but something still feels off, it’s usually not about buying more.

But understanding what’s driving your decisions.

I was at Smart Works again this week, doing my re-training.

I’ve been volunteering with them (as a dresser/stylist) for a few years now, and every time I go back I forget how special that place is until I’m standing there again, surrounded by rails of clothes that honestly look like they’ve been pulled from a very well funded fashion cupboard somewhere in central London.

For those who don’t know it, Smart Works is a charity that helps women get back into work, not just by giving them clothes, but by preparing them for interviews, supporting them through that moment of stepping back into professional life, and making sure they walk into that room feeling like they belong there.

And they really do that.

It’s not what people expect.

You hear charity and you imagine something else entirely. But this is different. Beautiful tailoring, luxury brands, pieces that already carry a certain weight before anyone even puts them on. It’s quite magical, actually.

And then the women arrive.

And this is always the part that stays with me.

They don’t walk in excited. They don’t walk in thinking “I’m about to be transformed.” They walk in a little guarded, a little unsure, slightly deflated in that very quiet way you only recognise if you’ve ever stood in front of your wardrobe at 7am and felt like nothing in there belonged to you anymore.

Which, let’s be honest, most of us have.

So we start slowly. You talk, you guide, you bring a few options, you adjust things here and there. Nothing dramatic. No big reveal moment. And yet, within minutes, something clicks.

It’s not confidence, not yet. It’s something softer than that.

It’s recognition.

You can literally see it happen. The way they look at themselves changes. The way they stand changes. There’s a moment where it really clicks, almost like, oh… there you are.

And it happens fast. Faster than people think.

Every time I see it, I have the same thought in the back of my mind, imagine this, but with your own wardrobe. Not one outfit, but thirty. Forty. Fifty-two. (Yes, that’s still my record in a three-hour session, and yes, the dopamine from that is borderline addictive.)

Now, here’s where it gets interesting.

At Smart Works, we’re trained very carefully on how we speak. There’s a lot of safeguarding, which is completely right in that context, so we don’t comment on bodies, we don’t talk about sizing, we don’t even say things like “this makes you look amazing.” Everything is framed around how the woman feels.

And in that space, it works beautifully.

But in my own work, in real wardrobe edits, there’s another layer that we can’t avoid.

Because after working on more than 150 wardrobes, I can tell you something that might not be very comfortable to hear, but it’s always true,

the problem is almost never the clothes.

It’s what we’re not willing to see.

There is always a moment, always, where we reach a piece that hasn’t been worn in years. And I’ll ask, very casually, “why don’t you wear this?”

And the answers are incredibly consistent.

“I’m keeping it for when I lose weight.”

“I used to wear this all the time before…”

“I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right anymore.”

Which sounds harmless on the surface, but what’s really sitting underneath is much bigger.

It’s not about the dress. It’s about the version of themselves attached to it.

And this is where building a wardrobe becomes something else entirely, because you cannot build something functional for a life, or a body, you are not fully acknowledging.

We love talking about body shapes, proportions, colour analysis… all the things that feel very technical and safe. But what I’ve realised over time is that most women don’t avoid those because they’re complicated.

They avoid them because they require honesty.

Real honesty.

Not “I’ll get back into this next year.”

Not “this will work when I…”

Not “I used to be…”

Just, this is where I am now.

And once you land there, something quite unexpected happens. Things start working. Quickly.

I’ve seen women completely change the way they look in a matter of minutes just by adjusting proportions, lifting a waistband slightly higher, adding a bit of structure to the shoulder, choosing a length that actually works with their body instead of against it. We’re talking centimetres, not transformations.

But those centimetres require acceptance.

Because if you’re still dressing for a different body, a different life, a different version of yourself, everything will feel slightly off, no matter how beautiful the clothes are.

And the irony, which I find fascinating every single time, is that the moment women stop resisting where they are, everything else starts moving. Confidence shifts, energy changes, and yes, sometimes even the body follows, but not from pressure. From alignment.

So if last week we talked about building your wardrobe around your lifestyle, this is the part that comes right after.

You have to build it around the truth.

Not the aspirational version, the past version, or the one day version.

The one that is standing in front of the mirror right now.

That’s the real starting point.

Everything else is just decoration.

You don’t need more clothes.

You need clarity.

There’s a moment every year when I realise spring has arrived, and it’s never on the official date.

It usually happens in a very ordinary way.

Maybe I’m walking somewhere I’ve walked a hundred times before and suddenly notice that the trees are a brighter green than they were last week. Or I step outside in the morning wearing the coat I’ve been wearing all winter and realise halfway down the street that it suddenly feels… like too much.

Spring wardrobes always create a very particular type of confusion.

Every year it’s the same ritual.

Someone posts a photo wearing a beautiful coat, or the perfect linen set, or a pair of trousers that somehow makes them look like they live in a quiet Italian town where everyone owns a bicycle and drinks espresso slowly.

And immediately the comments begin.

Where is it from?

I need that.

Send the link.

Which is understandable.

We see something beautiful and our brain immediately assumes the solution is acquisition.

Buy!

Problem solved.

Except… it rarely is.

Because what people forget is that wardrobes are not Pinterest boards.

They are ecosystems.

And ecosystems only work when the elements belong to the same environment.

What works beautifully for one woman can be completely useless for another, because her life is different. Her mornings don’t look the same, her job asks for something else, her body moves differently, even the weather she wakes up to changes everything. And yet we keep dressing as if all of those things didn’t matter.

Even different tolerance for discomfort, which is a very real category in my professional opinion.

Some women will happily wear structured trousers all day.

Others will slowly lose their will to live by 2pm.

And this is why copying wardrobes almost always fails.

Not because you don’t have taste.

But because the architecture behind the outfit is different.

So when spring arrives and everyone suddenly feels the urge to refresh everything, which is a completely natural instinct by the way, I always suggest starting somewhere very boring.

Not shopping.

Observation.

Specifically three things.

(You might spot a few repeated looks, before you think I’ve run out of ideas, it’s intentional. The best outfits are never following just one rule, they’re layering a few at once… which is exactly why they look so good.)

1. Light and Dark (the easiest styling trick in the world)

If your top is light, make the bottom darker.

If the bottom is light, anchor it with something darker above.

This is one of those principles that stylists learn very early because the human eye loves contrast.

Without contrast the body disappears slightly inside the clothing.

With contrast the silhouette suddenly looks structured.

Think about the classic white shirt and dark trousers combination.

It’s not a cliché by accident.

It works because the eye immediately understands the shape of the body.

Fashion people call this value contrast, but honestly that sounds more complicated than it needs to be.

It’s simply light against dark.

Magnolias against branches.

2. Tight and Loose (the rhythm rule)

The second balance is proportion.

If the top is fitted, allow the bottom to move.

If the bottom is slim, let the top breathe.

When everything is tight the outfit feels tense.

When everything is oversized the body disappears and the outfit starts wearing you.

Somewhere in the middle is where the magic lives.

You see this constantly in good street style photography.

A structured jacket with relaxed trousers.

A slim knit with a fuller skirt.

It creates rhythm.

And rhythm, strangely enough, is what our brain reads as effortless.

3. Skin, choose your moment

Spring is usually when skin begins to appear again.

A lower neckline.

Bare legs.

Lighter fabrics.

And this is where restraint becomes very powerful.

If the neckline is open, keep the bottom more classic.

If you show leg, let the top stay a little quieter.

Otherwise the eye doesn’t know where to look.

And when the eye doesn’t know where to look, the outfit loses authority.

One focal point is elegant.

Three is chaos.

4. The Three Colour Rule (which saves a lot of unnecessary stress)

If you ever feel stuck getting dressed, limit the palette.

Three colours usually work perfectly:

• one light

• one medium

• one dark

This automatically creates continuity.

Shoes can echo one of them.

The bag can repeat another.

And suddenly the outfit feels cohesive without looking overly coordinated.

It’s also why monochromatic outfits always feel slightly elevated.

Not because everything is perfectly matched, actually, that’s where people get it wrong.

Monochromatic doesn’t mean same exact shade, head to toe.

It means one colour family, explored properly.

Different shades, depths, and tones of the same colour.

You can wear cream with ivory.

Chocolate with camel.

Soft grey with charcoal.

They don’t have to match perfectly, they just have to belong to the same story.

I once had a client whose wardrobe was almost entirely purple. I’m not exaggerating, maybe 70% of it. Every shade you can imagine. Lavender, plum, deep aubergine, softer lilacs.

And she wasn’t wearing most of it.

Because she thought if the shades didn’t match exactly, they couldn’t go together.

So everything stayed separated, waiting for the “right” combination that never came.

When in reality, mixing those shades was exactly what would have made the outfits interesting.

Because that’s where monochromatic dressing becomes powerful.

Not in perfection.

In variation.

And this is where texture comes in.

Because if you’re wearing similar colours from head to toe, texture is what creates depth.

Leather with knit.

Silk with denim.

Wool with something soft and fluid.

Even something as simple as a structured blazer with a lightweight top underneath can completely change how the outfit feels.

Without texture, a monochromatic outfit can fall flat.

With texture, it becomes layered, considered, and. quietly, very expensive looking.

And there’s another reason stylists love this approach.

It elongates the body.

When the eye doesn’t get interrupted by harsh colour breaks, it travels smoothly from top to bottom. Which makes you look taller, more streamlined, more put together without trying too hard.

It’s one of the simplest ways to look elegant.

And one of the most misunderstood.

5. The luxury trick nobody talks about, white space

Designers, architects, magazines, galleries, they all use the same principle.

White space.

In clothing it works the same way.

Add a white element to an otherwise dark outfit and suddenly everything breathes.

Think of an all-black outfit with a crisp white shirt underneath.

Or a dark blazer with a white tee.

The white creates a visual pause.

Luxury stores do this constantly in their displays.

Magazines do it in editorials.

Because when the eye has space to rest, everything looks more expensive.

And this is why spring dressing is secretly the easiest season to master, because the season itself already teaches you the principle.

Light against dark.

Structure against softness.

Flowers against branches.

Balance.

Which, coincidentally, is also the secret behind almost every elegant wardrobe. ;)
