I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that because it is the exact opposite of how most women get dressed in the morning.

Most women get dressed in reaction. To the weather, the meeting, the mood, the laundry situation, the low-grade feeling that they don’t quite look the part, even though nobody has ever clearly defined what the part is, and it keeps changing anyway. Getting dressed becomes this daily negotiation with no script and no clear answer, and it’s exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain because from the outside it just looks like a woman standing in front of a full wardrobe saying she has nothing to wear. Which is its own kind of embarrassing. Which makes it worse.

What if it started from the other direction?

There’s something called method dressing that’s been finding its way into fashion conversations lately. The idea is borrowed from acting, you dress not for the occasion but for the character. Not the character you’re performing for other people. The one you’re in the middle of becoming. Actors don’t start with the costume. They start with the person. What does she believe? What has she survived? What does she want so badly she’d never say it out loud? The clothes come from that. Not the other way around.

This is what I keep coming back to with clients. Because the most interesting thing that ever happens in a wardrobe edit, and I’ve done enough of them now to say this with some confidence, is never really about the clothes. It’s about the question underneath the clothes. And that question is almost always the same: who am I now? And does what I own actually reflect her?

Sometimes the answer is no because the wardrobe belongs to a previous chapter. The woman who built her career in her thirties, dressed for that version of herself - structured, armoured, quietly authoritative - and is now in her forties wanting something completely different. Something that actually feels like her rather than a role she’s grown out of. But the old clothes still fit, and getting rid of them feels wasteful, and she’s busy, so she keeps them. And every morning she opens the wardrobe and feels vaguely unsupported by everything she owns and can’t quite explain why.

Sometimes the wardrobe belongs to a chapter that hasn’t started yet. The event that never happened. The body that’s still coming. The life that’s perpetually about three months away from beginning properly. And sometimes, this is the one that stays with me, the woman has already changed completely. She knows who she is now. She just hasn’t told her wardrobe yet.

Method dressing in real life isn’t about doing what Zendaya does at a press tour, though she does it better than almost anyone and it’s worth paying attention to for that reason (with the help and great vision of her stylist Law Roach). It’s a much quieter practice. It’s asking, before you open the wardrobe, who you are actually dressing today. Not who you were. Not who someone else needs you to be. Who you are in this specific chapter, with what this chapter is actually asking of you.

What does the woman building something from scratch wear on the days she doesn’t quite believe in herself yet? What does the woman who just came out the other side of something hard wear when she’s ready to stop dressing like someone in recovery and start dressing like someone who made it through? What does the woman falling in love wear, not to attract someone, but to remind herself who she is before anyone else’s perception gets involved?

These are not small questions. And they have almost nothing to do with what’s in season.

Patricia Field knew this. She didn’t ask what Carrie would wear because it was fashionable. She asked who Carrie was. The clothes followed. That’s why they lasted.

The work I do is the real life version of that conversation. We go into the wardrobe not to find what’s missing but to find who’s there. What the clothes already know about the woman wearing them. What chapter they belong to and whether that chapter is still hers. And almost every time, what we find is that she already has what she needs. She just hasn’t been asked the right questions yet.

This is not an accident.

The fashion industry… and I include in this the algorithm, the influencers, the brands, the magazines that have migrated to Substack and are now doing the exact same thing but in a longer format with better typography, has one fundamental interest, and it is not your self-expression. It is your self-doubt.

A woman who feels clear about who she is and what she likes is a woman who buys considerably less. She is, from a commercial perspective, a problem. The entire system depends on you remaining slightly uncertain, behind, and in need of the next thing that will finally make it click.

So it gives you a rotating cast of selves to aspire toward, and changes the lineup just often enough that you never quite arrive.

There is the body version of this, which is perhaps the most violent. I watch a woman on my screen, she is beautiful in the way that requires significant infrastructure and a ring light, me that she has finally found the pieces that work for her body, by which she means the body she has spent considerable energy and money producing. The implication, delivered with complete warmth and zero self-awareness, is that the clothes are the reward for having the right body first. That fit is something you earn. I go to the supermarket afterward and spend four minutes reading the protein content on a yoghurt I have bought every week for three years, because apparently the body I currently inhabit is a rough draft, and the clothes I want to wear are waiting on the other side of 150 grams of daily protein and six Lagree classes and whatever cortisol supplement just went viral on the wellness side of the algorithm, which has clocked that I am a woman in my thirties and has decided I am afraid of my own hormones.

Then there is the life version, which is subtler and in some ways more interesting. Women buy clothes for lives they do not currently live. I know this because I open wardrobes for a living, and what I find, consistently, is a kind of autobiographical fiction rendered in fabric. There is the section for the woman who goes to more events. The silk that’s waiting for the right occasion, which has been coming since 2019. The holiday pieces that have only ever seen the inside of a suitcase, then a wardrobe, then a suitcase again, unworn, because the version of herself that wears them, relaxed, sunlit, completely at ease, doesn’t quite exist in her actual daily life, and she can’t quite bring herself to admit that yet. The clothes are a promissory note. One day I will be the woman these things belong to.

And then there is the other people version, which is the one nobody talks about because it requires a level of honesty that is genuinely uncomfortable. Most women, if they sit with it long enough, will admit that a significant portion of their wardrobe was purchased in response to something external. A new job. A person they wanted to impress. A version of themselves they felt they were supposed to project in a specific context. A comment someone made once, years ago, that lodged somewhere and quietly became a dressing rule. The clothes are not self-expression. They are a negotiation with an imagined audience, conducted every single morning, mostly below the level of conscious thought.

What I find, every time, without exception, in every wardrobe I have ever worked in, is that the woman standing in front of me already knows who she is. The knowing is in there. It shows up in what she reaches for when she’s not thinking about it, what she feels most like herself in, what she’s kept for twenty years despite every clear-out. The disconnection is not a personality deficit. It is a product. It has been manufactured and maintained and delivered to her phone in an extremely compelling format, daily, for years.

The work I do is not about adding anything. It’s about removing enough noise that she can hear what was already true.

You already know what you like. You’ve just been given a lot of very well-produced reasons to doubt it.

Which is this.

The most interesting people to look at have accumulated something over time that cannot be purchased in a single session. References, curiosity, and a point of view that was built slowly, through the films they watched and the cities they lived in and the artists they fell for and the meals they ate in places that changed something in them, even slightly.

Pierre Bourdieu called it cultural capital, the knowledge, sensibilities and experiences a person accumulates over a lifetime, the invisible inheritance of everything they’ve absorbed. He was thinking about class and social distinction, which is interesting but not what I care about here.

What fascinates me is something much quieter, the way a person’s inner world, when they’ve actually been paying attention to it, starts to show up in the way they dress. Not consciously, or as a costume, just as a coherence. You look at them and think… this person knows who they are. And you’re right, though probably not because of the clothes.

After editing well over a hundred wardrobes, I’ve started noticing the same thing over and over again. The women with the most interesting style rarely own the most clothes. They almost always have the richest references. The ones who know exactly why they love a particular film, why they keep returning to the same neighbourhood whenever they travel, why one café feels more like them than another. None of that feels related to getting dressed until suddenly… it does.

The problem with how most women approach their wardrobe, and I say this with complete tenderness because I have done it too, is that the references come from outside. Trends, algorithms, the influencer whose aesthetic you’ve been quietly absorbing for two years without realising it. Those references aren’t wrong exactly. But they’re not yours either. And clothes built entirely on borrowed references produce outfits that are correct without being interesting, technically fine, but could also belong to anyone.

The alternative isn’t to stop looking outward. It’s to have enough of an interior world that when something outside catches your attention, you actually know why.

What stayed with me afterwards wasn’t that he was fashionable.

He wasn’t trying to be.

What fascinated me was that, listening to him speak, I realised I wasn’t really looking at his clothes. I was looking at fifty years of references.

Italy was still there, in the way he values quality, in the details he notices, in the way he carries himself. London has left its marks too. The edges, the eclecticism, the slight unpredictability. The openness to collect influences without ever losing himself inside them.

He dresses like someone who has spent decades paying attention to his own life.

And somehow…

…you can see it.

That’s what I mean by cultural capital made visible.

Not wearing your influences literally.

Not recreating someone else’s Pinterest board.

Just allowing the slow accumulation of a life genuinely lived and genuinely noticed to quietly find its way into the way you get dressed every morning.

But I also want to leave you with something practical because I don’t want this to stay as an interesting theory.

Instead of asking yourself,

“What should I buy next?”

Try asking yourself something completely different.

“What have I been collecting all these years that has nothing to do with clothes?”

Every stylish person I’ve ever admired has left clues behind.

Usually in the same places.

The films they watch again and again.

The music they always return to.

The restaurants they recommend without hesitation.

The books with folded pages.

The cities they never quite stop talking about.

The exhibitions they still remember years later.

None of those things are random.

Eventually a thread starts appearing.

Maybe you’re always drawn to clean architecture, muted colours and quiet spaces. Maybe you keep choosing warm wood, old leather, handwritten menus and jazz bars without ever realising you’ve been making the same aesthetic decision for twenty years.

That’s far more interesting than whether burgundy is trending this autumn.

The creative part isn’t collecting more inspiration.

It’s recognising what all your references already have in common and letting that become the foundation of your wardrobe.

You’re not dressing like a character.

You’re asking yourself a much better question.

What is it about this that moves me… and how could that feeling exist inside something I wear?

Look at someone like The Row’s founders, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Their wardrobes don’t feel recognisable because they’re following trends. They feel recognisable because decades of references, art, architecture, travel, restraint, proportion, have slowly become one visual language.

Or think about Phoebe Philo. Women didn’t just copy her clothes. They copied the feeling her work gave them: intelligence, ease, confidence without performance.

That’s the difference.

One is fashion.

The other is a point of view.

That’s the wardrobe I’m interested in helping women build.

Not a bigger one.

A more inhabited one.

One that reflects an actual person who has actually lived, rather than a collection of correct answers to questions someone else was asking.

You already have more references than you think.

You’ve just never been invited to use them.

Here is what I find genuinely funny, in a way that is also slightly tragic. Almost every client I work with tells me the same thing before we start. Some version of… I don’t have much. It’s all quite old. I’m not sure you’ll have enough to work with. And I smile, because I’ve heard this exact sentence (this exact sentence, in this exact apologetic tone) more than a hundred and fifty times. And every single time, I open the wardrobe and find it full of clothes and sometimes even with the tags still on them.

Unworn, unloved, purchased with genuine intention and then quietly abandoned because by the time they arrived, the moment had passed, or the confidence had dipped, or a new thing had already appeared on the algorithm to make this thing feel slightly less like the answer. The clothes didn’t fail her, the idea that she needed to keep finding something new did.

Trends exist to make what you own feel expired.

This is what newness does, and I want to be very clear that newness is not an accident. It is a strategy.

Trends exist, and I say this as someone who has genuinely stopped talking about them because I find them almost entirely useless for the women I work with, trends exist to make what you own feel expired. To create the sensation that your wardrobe has a use-by date. That last season’s pieces are last season’s version of you, and surely you’ve grown, surely you deserve something that reflects who you are now, which is apparently someone who needs to spend money to prove it. It is an extraordinarily effective system. It works on almost everyone. And the proof is in the tags still attached to the things hanging in your wardrobe right now.

Last week I did a session with a client who has become a proper friend, in her forties, works in marketing, full of natural sophistication and presence. She was nervous before I arrived. She told me afterward she’d been scared I’d open her wardrobe, look at what was in there, and say there’s nothing I can do with this. She was ready to step into the next version of herself. She just didn’t think her current wardrobe was going to get her there, because she couldn’t spot the patterns repeating in her wardrobe.

We put together thirty-something outfits. From what she already owned.

Some of the combinations we put together made no logical sense on paper, a holiday piece she’d only ever worn in thirty-degree heat, layered with a hoodie she used for working from home. A skirt that had only ever seen boardrooms ended up paired as a simple casual set for a Saturday. Evening pieces that had been waiting for the right occasion got pulled into daytime looks that actually had somewhere to go. All of it went into a ready-to-wear LookBook she now opens in the morning instead of standing in front of the rail wondering where to start. These were clothes she’d had for years, some of them for over a decade, all of them apparently not enough, right up until the moment someone actually looked at them properly.

Same pieces, different context… that’s the whole secret.

But here’s the part I keep thinking about. In the room, while I was telling her (genuinely, not in a professional encouragement voice) how good something looked, she couldn’t receive it. She heard me. She believed I meant it. She still couldn’t see it. It wasn’t until she watched the footage back that something settled. She sent a voice note to our community afterward and said she’d had to see the evidence before she could believe it. Before she could think… oh. That actually works. I do look like that.

We have lost the ability to trust our own eyes about ourselves. Someone else has to hold up the evidence before we believe it. And I think that’s the thing nobody is talking about when they talk about style, not the clothes, the trends, or the shopping. The fact that somewhere along the way, most women stopped being a reliable witness to themselves. Stopped trusting what they see in the mirror without external confirmation. Started needing a camera, a comment, a stylist, a stranger’s opinion to validate something they could have just… believed.

Wisdom is the glow up they can’t sell you. Freedom from whether or not someone finds you beautiful. The quiet, slightly boring, life-changing decision to look at what you already have - in your wardrobe, in yourself - and think, actually. This is more than enough.

A personal note before I go.

This week I needed to step back from the noise for a bit. What is happening in Venezuela has been sitting with me in a way I haven’t quite known what to do with, not in a way I can fix, but in the way that certain things cut through everything and remind you what is actually real. I’ve been thinking about how much energy we spend on things that feel urgent and aren’t, and how little on noticing what we already have. I can’t do much from here except speak up, give visibility to it from my platforms, pray, and try to live more intentionally, to honour the life I have rather than keep treating it like a rough draft.

That probably sounds strange at the end of a newsletter about personal style. But I think it’s the same thing, stop waiting, see what’s already there, look in the mirror and think you’re good, everything is probably not perfect, but make a decision to stop waiting for permission to believe it.

Lately, I’ve found myself posting less, talking less, generally spending less time worrying about whether I’ve shown up in all the places we’re apparently supposed to show up. It wasn’t intentional, life simply carried on, and somewhere in the middle of client sessions, workshops, school runs, and everything else that comes with being a single mother running a business, I stopped paying quite so much attention to the noise.

What surprised me was how much space that created.

I’m a woman with far too many opinions, endless observations, and a running commentary happening in my head at all times. I can turn a conversation about a pair of loafers into a discussion about identity, and spend twenty minutes explaining why someone’s favourite handbag probably says more about them than their LinkedIn profile. The ideas were never the issue. :)

There is a version of content creation that looks like contribution but is actually performance. Showing up consistently, hitting the right topics, editing everything so it lands well with the right people. I have been doing some of that…. and I am bored of it. Not of the work, of the performance around the work. There is a difference and I think most women reading this know exactly what I mean because they have been performing in some version of that same way for years.

A few weeks ago, I was hosting a styling session in Marylebone. I sat in a room with a group of senior executive women and we talked about wardrobes, identity, and what it actually means to dress like yourself rather than for the room you are walking into. And something about that evening made me stop and sit with a question I had been avoiding.

How much of what I put out into the world is actually mine, and how much of it is dressed up for approval?

I read Patricia Field’s book recently. She styled Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Emily in Paris. One of the most influential women in fashion for decades. And what came through on every page was not expertise or strategy or a method. It was complete and total indifference to what anyone else thought she should be doing. She was so entirely herself that the work became inevitable. Reading it did not inspire me. It gave me permission to recognise that I am already doing that. That the thing I have been moving toward is not somewhere ahead of me. I am already in it.

In six months I turn 40. I expected to feel some version of pressure about that. Instead I feel something closer to relief. Like the last few years have been slowly removing everything that was never really mine, the performing, the dressing for roles rather than for myself, the waiting for the right moment to say the thing I actually think. I stopped waiting. It feels extraordinarily free and slightly inconvenient for anyone expecting me to stay in a lane.

Here is what I actually believe about style, said plainly without the content wrapper around it. Most women do not have a wardrobe problem. But a self-knowledge problem. And they avoid solving it because looking honestly at what you wear means looking honestly at who you are presenting to the world, and sometimes that is uncomfortable.

Jennifer Aniston has essentially been wearing variations of the same outfit for decades (jeans, white tanks, simple tailoring, great hair, aviator glasses)… Nobody ever seems particularly bothered by the repetition. In fact, people admire it. Which I find fascinating because women spend an extraordinary amount of time worrying that they are boring, predictable, repetitive, not evolving enough, not changing enough. And yet one of the most consistently stylish women alive has spent thirty years looking almost exactly like herself.

I don’t think women come to me because they want more clothes. If that were true, Zara would have solved the problem years ago.

What they’re usually searching for is much harder to buy. They’re looking for that feeling of recognition. The relief of opening a wardrobe and seeing themselves instead of a collection of decisions made for different versions of their life.

That is what I want to help women find. Not a wardrobe that looks good. A wardrobe that is so completely theirs that getting dressed stops being a daily negotiation and starts being the least complicated thing in their day.

Because if it did work, just like that, most women wouldn’t be standing in front of full wardrobes every morning feeling like something is slightly… off, maybe not completely wrong, but not quite right either.

There’s a version of style advice that has become very popular lately.

“Dress how you feel.”

It sounds good and freeing, like the kind of thing that should solve everything in one sentence.

And to be fair, there is truth in it.

Clothing does affect how you feel. You know that the moment you put something on that just works and your whole posture changes without you even noticing.

But there’s a small detail that gets conveniently ignored.

You don’t feel the same every day.

Some days you wake up clear, decisive, and ready.

Other days you wake up and your brain feels like it’s buffering. You’re tired, slightly irritated, not entirely sure what version of yourself is required today.

Now imagine building your wardrobe decisions entirely around that.

“Dress how you feel.”

Fine.

Today I feel:

• slightly bloated

• mildly existential

• emotionally attached to my duvet

• and one inconvenient email away from rethinking my entire career

What exactly are we wearing for that?

This is where the advice starts to collapse.

Because if you dress purely based on how you feel, you end up reinforcing the very state you’re trying to move out of.

Low energy → low effort → clothes that don’t support you → you feel worse → repeat.

It’s not style, it’s a feedback loop.

And this is also where ‘effortless’ enters the chat.

Or at least the idea of it.

We love the word effortless. We use it like it’s the ultimate goal. As if somewhere out there there’s a version of dressing where everything just… happens.

No thinking, adjusting, or second-guessing.

Just a woman, in a perfect outfit, casually living her life.

I don’t think effortless exists.

I think some women just stopped overthinking because they made certain decisions in advance.

They removed variables.

They decided what works, what doesn’t, what belongs to them and what doesn’t.

And now it looks effortless from the outside.

But inside, it’s structured intentionally, and repeated enough times that it becomes instinct.

The same thing is happening with another trend I keep hearing about: dopamine dressing.

Wear bright colours. Wear something fun. Boost your mood through clothing.

Again, not wrong.

But also… incomplete.

Because dopamine dressing when you already feel good is one thing.

Dopamine dressing when you feel like absolute shit is another.

You don’t need a neon dress when your nervous system is already overwhelmed.

You don’t need more stimulation.

You need grounding.

Clarity.

Something that holds you, not something that performs for you.

And yet, what do most women do?

They go shopping.

Not because they need something.

Because they feel something.

• A bad week: “I deserve something new.”

• A confusing phase: “maybe I just need to refresh my wardrobe.”

• A moment of insecurity: “this might make me feel better.”

And for a few hours, it works.

Until the new piece enters the same wardrobe, under the same lack of clarity, and becomes part of the same problem.

So instead of asking:

“What do I feel like wearing today?”

A much better question is:

“What do I need today?”

They’re not the same.

And that tiny shift changes everything.

Because when you know what you need, you start editing.

You stop reacting.

You stop letting your mood dictate your wardrobe.

And you start using your wardrobe to support your life.

This is also why the ‘three words method’ works when it’s done properly.

Not as an aesthetic exercise.

Not as today I feel soft, feminine, Parisian.

But as a filter.

A way of deciding, in advance, what stays and what goes.

What belongs to you and what was just… a moment.

Effortless doesn’t come from dressing how you feel.

It comes from knowing what to remove before you even get dressed.

What most of these methods are trying to do,(and why they sometimes work), is point you in the right direction.

But none of them hold on their own.

Because without structure, every decision becomes reactive.

And this is the part most women skip, because it asks for something different.

It asks you to stop letting your mood lead every decision.

You feel something, you dress for it, you second-guess it, and the cycle repeats.

What actually makes any of this work is much quieter than that.

It’s knowing, in advance, what belongs to you.

What supports you.
What you reach for when you’re not thinking.
What consistently works, regardless of how you feel that day.

That’s where the ease comes from.

Not from dressing for your mood.

From removing the need to negotiate with it every morning.

Not just with skincare, supplements, protein powders, ergonomic desk chairs and the kind of water bottle that suggests both hydration and moral superiority. With clothes, obviously. Especially clothes. Because clothes have one enormous advantage over every other form of self-improvement: they arrive quickly, they look like progress, and for a brief moment they let you believe the problem has been identified and solved by 11:32am on a Tuesday.

I have a friend - brilliant, funny, earns more than most men she knows, which she mentions rarely but thinks about constantly - who keeps buying clothes for the woman she believes she is on the verge of becoming. Not a fantasy exactly. Just a slightly upgraded version of herself who apparently spends more time in silk shirts than WhatsApp groups, and whose life requires a rotation of tonal knitwear despite the fact she lives in a country where most of the year is one long argument with the weather. Her wardrobe is full. Genuinely full. Rails, boxes, “investment pieces,” shoes in dust bags, dresses waiting for the right occasion to redeem themselves. And she still tells me, with complete sincerity, that she has nothing to wear.

I’m not judging her. I’m describing myself with a different haircut.

We talk about the algorithm as though it happened to us, as though we were innocent bystanders in our own consumption. The app suggested it. The ad found me. The influencer was very convincing. But somewhere between twenty-three and now, I made a series of completely voluntary choices to outsource my sense of self to a rotating cast of objects, and the objects keep failing to deliver and I keep ordering more. There is a word for this. Several, actually. None of them are flattering.

The wardrobe version of this is particularly embarrassing, because it always arrives dressed as self-knowledge. You’re not shopping, you’re “refining your style.” You’re not impulse buying, you’re “building a capsule.” You’re not repeating the same pattern in a fresh neutral, you’re “investing in elevated basics.” Meanwhile, your fourth cream blazer is entering the house like a new political candidate promising structural change, and by Sunday evening you’re standing half-dressed in front of the mirror, feeling exactly the same as before, except now with better tailoring and a lower bank balance.

Here is what nobody tells you about being a woman in the last year of her thirties who is, by any reasonable metric, doing fine… the noise gets louder, not quieter. You would think that by now, with the career, the therapy, the increasingly low tolerance for uncomfortable shoes and other people’s projections, you might have developed some immunity. But the machine has studied you for years. It knows exactly when to offer reinvention disguised as practicality. It knows you are tired. It knows you want ease. It knows you will respond to phrases like “timeless,” “effortless,” “French,” “soft power,” and “quiet luxury” as if they are not just aesthetic suggestions but solutions to a life you are trying to hold together with some dignity.

And because women are very resourceful, we do what we always do: we become excellent at adapting. We can dress for the meeting, the school run, the date, the lunch, the life we have, the life we want, the life we briefly saw on Pinterest and decided we might be able to approximate if we found the right trousers. We become women with range. Women who can do polished, relaxed, feminine, minimal, confident, understated, creative, classic, elevated, effortless. Which sounds impressive until you realise that range is often what develops when no strong point of view has been allowed to harden.

That, to me, is where the real problem begins.

Because most women I work with do not need more clothes. They need a clearer opinion. Not about trends. Not about what’s flattering in the most superficial sense. About themselves. About who they are now, what their life actually asks of them, what they’re no longer available for, what they want their clothes to hold, communicate, protect, or stop apologising for.

Instead, they buy in fragments. A jacket for the competent version of themselves. A dress for the spontaneous version. A co-ord for the woman who definitely books better holidays than they do. Shoes for a social life that has been “coming back properly” since 2019. And because none of these purchases are being made from one coherent point of view, the wardrobe becomes a holding pen for multiple selves who do not speak to each other.

This is why women end up with wardrobes that look abundant and feel useless. Not because they lack taste. Usually the opposite. The pieces are often good. Expensive, even. Chosen with genuine desire. But desire without structure is just accumulation with a prettier backstory.

There’s a kind of pain point I see over and over again, especially in women between their late thirties and mid-fifties, and it has almost nothing to do with fashion in the way people think. It’s the exhaustion of having enough and still feeling unsupported by what you own. It’s opening a wardrobe full of options and feeling no sense of relief. It’s realising that every new purchase has been trying to answer a question you still haven’t asked properly. Not “what should I wear?” but “who am I dressing for now?” And, more uncomfortably, “what am I still trying to prove?”

The answer is rarely aesthetic. It’s emotional. Women keep buying because buying lets them postpone the harder decision, which is to become more definite. More honest. Less available for every possible version of themselves. Because once you decide who you are, a lot of things stop being options. And that can feel, at first, like a loss. In reality it is the beginning of taste.

A strong wardrobe is not built by someone with endless options. It is built by someone with a strong enough opinion to refuse most of them.

That opinion does not come from another haul, another “must-have,” another woman’s morning routine, another woman’s body, another woman’s Substack, another woman’s life. It comes from sitting still long enough to notice what keeps repeating. What you buy when you feel uncertain. What you reach for when you want to disappear. What you save for later because you still believe a better version of you is coming to deserve it.

The irony, of course, is that ease only begins once something is no longer up for discussion. When you know what belongs, what doesn’t, what supports you, what distracts you, what was purchased for a fantasy, what was purchased from fear, and what actually earns its place in your life. Then the wardrobe gets quieter. Faster. More useful. Less emotional. You stop asking it to rescue your identity and start allowing it to reflect one.

You don’t need more options. You need a stronger opinion about why you keep buying them.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a post from Eshita Kabra announcing her pregnancy.

It was beautiful news. The kind of thing that should feel simple, joyful, almost obvious. And yet the first line stayed with me longer than anything else. She said that many ambitious women find it difficult to share what is meant to be very happy news.

I remember pausing there for a moment, because it’s such a quiet sentence, but it carries something underneath it that feels heavier than it should.

Why is that still true?

That same week, something slightly unexpected happened Tiffanie Darke, whose writing I’ve followed for a while, particularly her ‘rule of five’ approach to consumption, reached out and asked if I would be open to a short interview about ‘life editing.’ No context, no preparation, just a quick call. I said yes without thinking too much about it, which in hindsight was probably the best way to approach it.

I joined the call already a bit tired. It was one of those days that start early and don’t really give you space to arrive anywhere fully. Kids on holidays, clients, volunteering day at SmartWorks, everything happening at once. You move through it, but your mind is still catching up. And because of that, I didn’t prepare anything. I didn’t think about what I was going to say, or how I should sound. I just showed up.

At some point she asked me about my comment on Eshita’s post, motherhood and work, and how it changes things. And I realised, while she was asking the question, that I didn’t really have a clean answer, because I don’t think it works in a clean way.

I had my first child when I was 23. I didn’t know what I was doing. I was still trying to understand myself, let alone another human being. There was no strategy behind it, no sense of timing, no idea of how this would fit into a career later on. Life just happened.

And for a long time, I tried to organise it in a way that made sense. I separated things. My work over here. My children over there. My personal life somewhere else. Trying to find balance by keeping everything slightly apart, as if that would make it easier to manage.

Only a couple of years ago I started to see that the separation was the thing that made it harder.

Because it creates this quiet feeling that parts of your life need to take turns existing. That you can be one thing now, and another thing later, and maybe (if everything goes well) you’ll eventually find a way to bring it all together.

What I have always resisted, though, even without fully realising it, is the idea of becoming just one version of myself. Just the mother. Just the professional. Just the woman who holds everything together quietly.

There has always been something in me that wanted all of it to stay alive at the same time. Not perfectly, or in balance all the time. But present.

I’ve always found it interesting, the way we talk about children as something that might affect our careers, as if they take something away.

That hasn’t been my experience. If anything, it has done the opposite.

Not in a polished, easy to explain way, but in the way life forces you to grow. To make decisions faster. To understand what matters. To hold more than one thing at once.

Things that, whether we say it or not, shape how you move professionally as well.

And yet, when I look around, I see how often we are still negotiating that. Not openly, but in small decisions. What we share. What we don’t. What we tone down. What we delay.

Even something as simple as announcing a pregnancy can become something that requires consideration, timing, almost justification.

It made me realise how much of our lives we are still editing. Not because we don’t know who we are, but because we are trying to make that version acceptable.

Acceptable at work. Acceptable socially. Acceptable in a way that doesn’t disrupt the image we think we’re supposed to maintain.

And the more I think about it, the more exhausting that feels.

Because there is no version of this that works perfectly. You can have children early and it will be questioned. You can have them later and it will be questioned. You can prioritise your career and something will feel out of place. You can prioritise your personal life and something else will feel compromised.

There is always something.

So at some point, it stops being about finding the right way to do it, and it becomes a decision. A quiet one, but a very clear one. To stop waiting. To stop editing yourself into something more acceptable. To stop asking for permission to live your life in the way that makes sense to you.

And this doesn’t just show up in life decisions.

It shows up in something much smaller, and much more daily.

In your wardrobe.

In the way you get dressed in the morning.

In the hesitation before wearing something that feels a little more like you. In the way you adjust it, soften it, bring it back into a range that feels acceptable. In the quiet question that sits underneath it all - is this too much? is this appropriate? am I allowed to look like this?

Clothing is one of the first places where that need for permission becomes visible.

Because what you wear is not just about clothes. It’s about how much of yourself you’re willing to show without negotiating it down first.

And most women are still editing there too.

Softening and simplifying themselves. Making themselves easier to read, easier to accept.

Until, at some point, you realise you’re doing the same thing everywhere, and it stops being about finding the right way to do it.

And it becomes a decision, a very clear one.

To stop waiting.

To stop editing yourself into a version that feels easier for everyone else to understand.

To stop asking for permission to live your life in the way that makes sense to you.

Because, truth is, no one is going to come and tell you that now is the perfect moment.

That this version of you is the right one.

That everything aligns and makes sense and has been approved.

That moment doesn’t exist.

What does exist is the choice to stop adjusting constantly.

To let the different parts of your life exist together, even if it feels messy, even if it doesn’t look the way you imagined it would.

To accept that there isn’t one clean version of you that replaces all the others, but many that need to coexist.

And maybe that’s what that sentence was really pointing to.

Not the difficulty of sharing good news.

But the weight of feeling like you need to explain why your life looks the way it does.

At some point, it becomes simpler to just… not.

I came across something Tony Robbins said recently, and it stayed with me far longer than I expected. He talks about the six human needs that drive everything we do (certainty, variety, significance, love, growth, contribution), and how every decision we make is, in some way, an attempt to meet them.

It sounds abstract until you start noticing where it shows up in real life.

For example, in front of your wardrobe.

There’s a very particular moment most women recognise immediately, you’re standing there, nothing is technically wrong, you have options, you’ve worn these clothes before, and yet something doesn’t land. You hesitate, you change once, twice, maybe three times, and eventually you reach for the outfit that has never betrayed you. The one that moves you through the day without questions, without attention, without friction.

You call it being practical. But what you’ve actually chosen is certainty.

And it happens in seconds. Quietly. Without you even noticing you’ve just made a decision about how visible you’re allowed to be that day.

A few days later, often without planning to, you see someone who carries herself differently. Not louder, not more dressed up, just more decided. And there’s a quiet recognition that has very little to do with her and everything to do with you, the version of you that feels just slightly out of reach.

So you try again. You put something on that feels closer to that version, and almost immediately you begin adjusting it. You soften it, you edit it down, you bring it back into a range that feels acceptable. Because as much as you want to be seen, you also want to belong, and that tension is where most wardrobes quietly fall apart.

This is where the conversation usually goes wrong.

We’ve been taught to diagnose this as a style issue, or a lack of discipline, or a need to shop better, when in reality it’s much closer to a misalignment of needs. You are trying to feel safe, and seen, and connected, and evolving, all at once, using clothes that were never chosen with those intentions in mind.

So one outfit leans too heavily into certainty and disappears. Another leans too heavily into significance and feels performative. Another chases variety and ends up disconnected from your actual life. And somewhere in between, you start to believe the problem is you.

What Robbins articulates, and what I see every day in my work, is that people don’t lack motivation. They lack awareness of what is driving their behaviour. Once you see it, everything becomes cleaner.

The woman who wears black every day is not boring; she is protecting her need for certainty (and probably saving herself ten decisions before 9am). The woman who keeps buying new pieces is not inconsistent; she is chasing variety without structure. The woman who saves her best outfits is not disorganised; she is negotiating her sense of significance. The woman who tones herself down is not lacking confidence; she is prioritising connection over visibility.

When those needs are met unconsciously, your wardrobe becomes a collection of compromises. When they are met deliberately, it becomes a system. That is the difference.

This is why I don’t start with trends or aesthetics, or even finding your style in the way it’s usually framed. I start with understanding what your life actually demands of you, and how you need to feel within it, because only then can you build something that holds you properly. A wardrobe that gives you certainty without shrinking you, variety without chaos, significance without performance, connection without self-abandonment, growth without confusion, and contribution without exhaustion.

Getting dressed was never just about clothes. It has always been about the quiet decisions you make about who you are allowed to be, and under what conditions. When those decisions are made on purpose, everything else becomes simpler in a way that feels almost surprising.

Looking good is easy. Feeling aligned is where things finally start to change.

If you’re in that space where your wardrobe technically works, but something still feels off, it’s usually not about buying more.

But understanding what’s driving your decisions.

I was at Smart Works again this week, doing my re-training.

I’ve been volunteering with them (as a dresser/stylist) for a few years now, and every time I go back I forget how special that place is until I’m standing there again, surrounded by rails of clothes that honestly look like they’ve been pulled from a very well funded fashion cupboard somewhere in central London.

For those who don’t know it, Smart Works is a charity that helps women get back into work, not just by giving them clothes, but by preparing them for interviews, supporting them through that moment of stepping back into professional life, and making sure they walk into that room feeling like they belong there.

And they really do that.

It’s not what people expect.

You hear charity and you imagine something else entirely. But this is different. Beautiful tailoring, luxury brands, pieces that already carry a certain weight before anyone even puts them on. It’s quite magical, actually.

And then the women arrive.

And this is always the part that stays with me.

They don’t walk in excited. They don’t walk in thinking “I’m about to be transformed.” They walk in a little guarded, a little unsure, slightly deflated in that very quiet way you only recognise if you’ve ever stood in front of your wardrobe at 7am and felt like nothing in there belonged to you anymore.

Which, let’s be honest, most of us have.

So we start slowly. You talk, you guide, you bring a few options, you adjust things here and there. Nothing dramatic. No big reveal moment. And yet, within minutes, something clicks.

It’s not confidence, not yet. It’s something softer than that.

It’s recognition.

You can literally see it happen. The way they look at themselves changes. The way they stand changes. There’s a moment where it really clicks, almost like, oh… there you are.

And it happens fast. Faster than people think.

Every time I see it, I have the same thought in the back of my mind, imagine this, but with your own wardrobe. Not one outfit, but thirty. Forty. Fifty-two. (Yes, that’s still my record in a three-hour session, and yes, the dopamine from that is borderline addictive.)

Now, here’s where it gets interesting.

At Smart Works, we’re trained very carefully on how we speak. There’s a lot of safeguarding, which is completely right in that context, so we don’t comment on bodies, we don’t talk about sizing, we don’t even say things like “this makes you look amazing.” Everything is framed around how the woman feels.

And in that space, it works beautifully.

But in my own work, in real wardrobe edits, there’s another layer that we can’t avoid.

Because after working on more than 150 wardrobes, I can tell you something that might not be very comfortable to hear, but it’s always true,

the problem is almost never the clothes.

It’s what we’re not willing to see.

There is always a moment, always, where we reach a piece that hasn’t been worn in years. And I’ll ask, very casually, “why don’t you wear this?”

And the answers are incredibly consistent.

“I’m keeping it for when I lose weight.”

“I used to wear this all the time before…”

“I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right anymore.”

Which sounds harmless on the surface, but what’s really sitting underneath is much bigger.

It’s not about the dress. It’s about the version of themselves attached to it.

And this is where building a wardrobe becomes something else entirely, because you cannot build something functional for a life, or a body, you are not fully acknowledging.

We love talking about body shapes, proportions, colour analysis… all the things that feel very technical and safe. But what I’ve realised over time is that most women don’t avoid those because they’re complicated.

They avoid them because they require honesty.

Real honesty.

Not “I’ll get back into this next year.”

Not “this will work when I…”

Not “I used to be…”

Just, this is where I am now.

And once you land there, something quite unexpected happens. Things start working. Quickly.

I’ve seen women completely change the way they look in a matter of minutes just by adjusting proportions, lifting a waistband slightly higher, adding a bit of structure to the shoulder, choosing a length that actually works with their body instead of against it. We’re talking centimetres, not transformations.

But those centimetres require acceptance.

Because if you’re still dressing for a different body, a different life, a different version of yourself, everything will feel slightly off, no matter how beautiful the clothes are.

And the irony, which I find fascinating every single time, is that the moment women stop resisting where they are, everything else starts moving. Confidence shifts, energy changes, and yes, sometimes even the body follows, but not from pressure. From alignment.

So if last week we talked about building your wardrobe around your lifestyle, this is the part that comes right after.

You have to build it around the truth.

Not the aspirational version, the past version, or the one day version.

The one that is standing in front of the mirror right now.

That’s the real starting point.

Everything else is just decoration.

You don’t need more clothes.

You need clarity.

There’s a moment every year when I realise spring has arrived, and it’s never on the official date.

It usually happens in a very ordinary way.

Maybe I’m walking somewhere I’ve walked a hundred times before and suddenly notice that the trees are a brighter green than they were last week. Or I step outside in the morning wearing the coat I’ve been wearing all winter and realise halfway down the street that it suddenly feels… like too much.

Spring wardrobes always create a very particular type of confusion.

Every year it’s the same ritual.

Someone posts a photo wearing a beautiful coat, or the perfect linen set, or a pair of trousers that somehow makes them look like they live in a quiet Italian town where everyone owns a bicycle and drinks espresso slowly.

And immediately the comments begin.

Where is it from?

I need that.

Send the link.

Which is understandable.

We see something beautiful and our brain immediately assumes the solution is acquisition.

Buy!

Problem solved.

Except… it rarely is.

Because what people forget is that wardrobes are not Pinterest boards.

They are ecosystems.

And ecosystems only work when the elements belong to the same environment.

What works beautifully for one woman can be completely useless for another, because her life is different. Her mornings don’t look the same, her job asks for something else, her body moves differently, even the weather she wakes up to changes everything. And yet we keep dressing as if all of those things didn’t matter.

Even different tolerance for discomfort, which is a very real category in my professional opinion.

Some women will happily wear structured trousers all day.

Others will slowly lose their will to live by 2pm.

And this is why copying wardrobes almost always fails.

Not because you don’t have taste.

But because the architecture behind the outfit is different.

So when spring arrives and everyone suddenly feels the urge to refresh everything, which is a completely natural instinct by the way, I always suggest starting somewhere very boring.

Not shopping.

Observation.

Specifically three things.

(You might spot a few repeated looks, before you think I’ve run out of ideas, it’s intentional. The best outfits are never following just one rule, they’re layering a few at once… which is exactly why they look so good.)

1. Light and Dark (the easiest styling trick in the world)

If your top is light, make the bottom darker.

If the bottom is light, anchor it with something darker above.

This is one of those principles that stylists learn very early because the human eye loves contrast.

Without contrast the body disappears slightly inside the clothing.

With contrast the silhouette suddenly looks structured.

Think about the classic white shirt and dark trousers combination.

It’s not a cliché by accident.

It works because the eye immediately understands the shape of the body.

Fashion people call this value contrast, but honestly that sounds more complicated than it needs to be.

It’s simply light against dark.

Magnolias against branches.

2. Tight and Loose (the rhythm rule)

The second balance is proportion.

If the top is fitted, allow the bottom to move.

If the bottom is slim, let the top breathe.

When everything is tight the outfit feels tense.

When everything is oversized the body disappears and the outfit starts wearing you.

Somewhere in the middle is where the magic lives.

You see this constantly in good street style photography.

A structured jacket with relaxed trousers.

A slim knit with a fuller skirt.

It creates rhythm.

And rhythm, strangely enough, is what our brain reads as effortless.

3. Skin, choose your moment

Spring is usually when skin begins to appear again.

A lower neckline.

Bare legs.

Lighter fabrics.

And this is where restraint becomes very powerful.

If the neckline is open, keep the bottom more classic.

If you show leg, let the top stay a little quieter.

Otherwise the eye doesn’t know where to look.

And when the eye doesn’t know where to look, the outfit loses authority.

One focal point is elegant.

Three is chaos.

4. The Three Colour Rule (which saves a lot of unnecessary stress)

If you ever feel stuck getting dressed, limit the palette.

Three colours usually work perfectly:

• one light

• one medium

• one dark

This automatically creates continuity.

Shoes can echo one of them.

The bag can repeat another.

And suddenly the outfit feels cohesive without looking overly coordinated.

It’s also why monochromatic outfits always feel slightly elevated.

Not because everything is perfectly matched, actually, that’s where people get it wrong.

Monochromatic doesn’t mean same exact shade, head to toe.

It means one colour family, explored properly.

Different shades, depths, and tones of the same colour.

You can wear cream with ivory.

Chocolate with camel.

Soft grey with charcoal.

They don’t have to match perfectly, they just have to belong to the same story.

I once had a client whose wardrobe was almost entirely purple. I’m not exaggerating, maybe 70% of it. Every shade you can imagine. Lavender, plum, deep aubergine, softer lilacs.

And she wasn’t wearing most of it.

Because she thought if the shades didn’t match exactly, they couldn’t go together.

So everything stayed separated, waiting for the “right” combination that never came.

When in reality, mixing those shades was exactly what would have made the outfits interesting.

Because that’s where monochromatic dressing becomes powerful.

Not in perfection.

In variation.

And this is where texture comes in.

Because if you’re wearing similar colours from head to toe, texture is what creates depth.

Leather with knit.

Silk with denim.

Wool with something soft and fluid.

Even something as simple as a structured blazer with a lightweight top underneath can completely change how the outfit feels.

Without texture, a monochromatic outfit can fall flat.

With texture, it becomes layered, considered, and. quietly, very expensive looking.

And there’s another reason stylists love this approach.

It elongates the body.

When the eye doesn’t get interrupted by harsh colour breaks, it travels smoothly from top to bottom. Which makes you look taller, more streamlined, more put together without trying too hard.

It’s one of the simplest ways to look elegant.

And one of the most misunderstood.

5. The luxury trick nobody talks about, white space

Designers, architects, magazines, galleries, they all use the same principle.

White space.

In clothing it works the same way.

Add a white element to an otherwise dark outfit and suddenly everything breathes.

Think of an all-black outfit with a crisp white shirt underneath.

Or a dark blazer with a white tee.

The white creates a visual pause.

Luxury stores do this constantly in their displays.

Magazines do it in editorials.

Because when the eye has space to rest, everything looks more expensive.

And this is why spring dressing is secretly the easiest season to master, because the season itself already teaches you the principle.

Light against dark.

Structure against softness.

Flowers against branches.

Balance.

Which, coincidentally, is also the secret behind almost every elegant wardrobe. ;)

And I always find that moment fascinating.

Because what’s actually happening there is not shopping. It’s copying.

We see something that looks good on someone else and assume that if we buy the same piece, the same magic will somehow transfer into our own wardrobe.

But wardrobes don’t work like that.

What works beautifully for one woman can be completely useless for another, simply because their lives are different.

Different jobs.

Different climates.

Different routines.

Different social lives.

And yet we keep shopping as if we all live the same life.

Which is why so many women have wardrobes full of beautiful clothes and still wake up in the morning thinking…

If I Had to Build a Wardrobe From Zero

The first thing I would do is not go shopping.

I would sit down with a piece of paper and ask myself a very simple question,

What do I actually need to dress for?

Not aspirational life.

Not Pinterest life.

Real life.

Start with work.

For many women this is the easiest category because work usually comes with some form of dress code. But even within that, the details matter.

Do you lead meetings?

Are you mostly behind a laptop?

Do you move around a lot during the day?

Do you need authority in the room or comfort for long hours?

The answers to those questions shape your wardrobe far more than trends ever will.

The Social Life Question (This Is Where Things Get Interesting)

This is where wardrobes often drift away from reality.

Because this is where aspiration sneaks in.

Women buy pieces for a version of themselves that rarely appears.

Dresses for parties they never attend.

Shoes for nights out that happen maybe twice a year.

Outfits for events that exist mostly in imagination.

So the real question becomes:

What does your social life actually look like?

Is it dinners with friends?

The theatre?

Coffee dates?

School runs?

Weekend walks with your partner?

Walking the dog at 8am?

Those moments deserve wardrobes too.

And they are usually the clothes we wear the most.

The Third Factor Nobody Talks About Enough

Climate.

It sounds obvious, but it’s astonishing how often it’s ignored.

A wardrobe built for someone living in Spain will not look the same as a wardrobe built for someone living in London.

Cold climates require layers, outerwear, texture, and flexibility.

Warmer climates revolve around breathability, lighter fabrics, and different proportions.

Climate isn’t a small detail.

It’s architecture.

What Happens When You Start Here

Something interesting happens when you build your wardrobe around these three things:

• your work

• your real social life

• your climate

You stop buying randomly.

You stop copying what everyone else is wearing.

You start buying with intention.

Every new piece becomes a decision rather than an impulse.

And one question helps enormously before buying something new:

Can I already imagine three ways to wear this with what I own?

If the answer is no, the piece might be beautiful.

But it probably doesn’t belong in your wardrobe.

Because a functional wardrobe is not built through inspiration.

It’s built through clarity.

And once you have that clarity, shopping becomes much simpler, and much smarter.

You’re no longer buying what looks good on someone else.

You’re building something that actually works for you.

And this is the part where most women get stuck.

Because once you start looking at your wardrobe through this lens, the next question usually appears almost immediately.

Where do I actually start?

These are some of the questions I hear most often…

“I want to revamp my wardrobe and I don’t know where to start.”

“I feel like I have so many clothes, and yet I never know what to wear.”

“With everything I own, I always end up looking the same.”

And the truth is, this is rarely a clothing problem.

It’s a strategy problem.

A wardrobe works when it reflects your real life, your work, your social rhythm, your environment, and the way you actually move through your days.

Yesterday I met a friend I’ve known for years.

The kind of friend you don’t see often anymore because… life. Work. Children. Geography. Everything expanding in different directions.

We probably see each other once a year now.

But in a strange way, that makes the conversations deeper.

Because when you leave so much time between meetings, you can actually see the distance travelled. You remember exactly where the other person was the last time you saw them.

“Last year you were here,” one of us says.

“And now look where you are.”

It becomes impossible to ignore the movement.

Yesterday we were talking about the strange reality of my life over the last seven years.

On paper, it was probably the perfect recipe for not succeeding.

A single mother. In London, a city that is beautiful, but also fast, expensive, and sometimes unforgiving when you’re navigating it without a safety net.

There were years with financial restrictions. Breakups. The constant pressure of raising two human beings, not just financially, but emotionally and spiritually.

Because being a parent isn’t only about providing.

You have to be present.

You have to hold space for their fears, their dreams, their questions about the world. You have to guide them, protect them, love them, and still somehow remain a person yourself in the middle of it.

And that’s the part that can quietly disappear.

Yourself.

But something interesting came up in our conversation yesterday.

Despite everything that was happening during those years, the uncertainty, the responsibility, the pressure, there was one thing I never really compromised on.

I always tried to remain true to myself.

Not in a rebellious way.

Not loudly.

Just in a quiet, stubborn way.

I never felt particularly interested in seeking validation. I didn’t want approval from the outside. I didn’t want to live a life that looked right to other people if it didn’t feel right to me.

And if you think about it, that could easily have been the recipe for disaster.

But after all these years, I’m starting to believe something very different.

Life rewards intention.

Not immediately, or dramatically.

But slowly, and quietly.

When you live with a good heart. When you stay honest with yourself. When you share your experiences without pretending to be a teacher or a guru, just a human being figuring things out as she goes.

Something opens.

And yesterday evening reminded me of that again.

After our conversation, I went to a fashion show wearing an outfit that, without realising it, felt like a small visual diary of my life.

The suit belonged to my son.

He’s fifteen now, and the tailoring has that relaxed energy that only teenagers seem to carry naturally.

The silk tie, as a belt, was my dad’s.

The jewellery was a mix of pieces… some inherited from my mum, a necklace from my sister, little things that carry stories rather than trends.

And the top I was wearing was something I bought almost ten years ago to celebrate my 30th birthday, when my life looked completely different.

When I stepped back and looked at it, I realised the whole outfit was almost an ode to the masculine and feminine energies in me.

Strong tailoring from the suit.

Softness and memory in the jewellery.

Structure and emotion sitting in the same look.

And something fascinating happened.

A woman approached me and introduced herself. When I told her my name, she smiled and said she already knew who I was.

She had seen me months earlier at another event.

We had never spoken.

But she remembered the way I dressed. She remembered my energy. Somehow the two had stayed with her.

I found that fascinating.

Because clothing is one of the fastest ways identity becomes visible.

Before someone hears your ideas or reads your writing, they already perceive something through how you present yourself.

When your style is intentional and unapologetic, it communicates several things at once:

• self-trust

• creativity

• independence

• confidence in personal taste

• freedom from needing approval

For many women, seeing someone embody that can feel incredibly liberating.

It suggests that identity doesn’t have to follow strict rules.

And this is actually where most of my work with women begins.

Not with trends, and definitely not with shopping.

But with identity.

In my Style Strategy sessions, we take the pieces a woman already owns and build outfits, sometimes thirty, sometimes forty, my record so far is fifty two, that truly reflect who she is and the life she’s living.

Because when you can see yourself clearly in your clothes, something transforms.

You move and speak differently. And people notice.

Not because the clothes are extraordinary.

But because the person wearing them feels aligned.

Yesterday reminded me of something I think many women quietly need to hear.

You don’t need to wait for life to look perfect before you start expressing who you are.

You don’t need approval.

And you certainly don’t need to shrink yourself into something safer or more acceptable.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply remain true to your own path, even when it doesn’t look logical from the outside.

Because intention has a strange way of shaping the road ahead.

And authenticity has a way of finding its people.

So maybe the real question isn’t whether the world will accept who you are.

Maybe the real question is,

Are you allowing yourself to show it?

February has been whispering to me through very unlikely places lately, small moments that somehow keep repeating the same message.

Like my 15 year old son’s wardrobe.

Oversized hoodies. T-shirts he’s had forever. Trainers that look like they couldn’t care less. It’s not styling. It’s pure instinct. There’s no overthinking, or performance. Just certainty.

And I’ve been borrowing from it nonstop.

(Please don’t tell him I said that.)

Then I went to the Marie Antoinette exhibition at the V&A, which, of course, is sold out. (Is there anything remotely interesting right now that isn’t?) It ends in March, so if you have a friend with a membership, now is the time to plead. With dignity. Maybe even flowers.

And then there’s Margot Robbie on the Wuthering Heights press tour. Dresses that feel romantic but deliberate. Not pared down minimal. Not maximal either. Edited. Chosen. Considered. Her Stylist is a genius!

And then, because life loves a strange thread, I found myself lingering on Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Sarah Pidgeon playing Carolyn with this quiet, almost unsettling presence. There was nothing loud about Carolyn. But you can’t look away.

And that’s when it clicked.

Effortless doesn’t happen by accident.

If you trace all these moments, a teenage boy’s closet, an 18th-century queen, a 90s icon, a modern press wardrobe, what they share isn’t simplicity.

It’s control.

Not rigid control.

Quiet control.

Not minimal as absence, but minimal as decision.

The kind you only arrive at when you’ve decided what matters… and what doesn’t.

And here’s where it gets uncomfortable.

Carolyn wasn’t magnetic because she wore simple clothes. She was magnetic because nothing about her felt uncertain.

The clean lines worked because her presence was steady.

The lack of accessories worked because she didn’t need distraction.

The white shirt worked because everything else, posture, hair, gaze, restraint, was aligned.

You can copy the uniform, but you can’t copy the certainty.

That’s why so many women tell me they want a capsule wardrobe.

They think fewer pieces will create clarity. That minimal will make life easier. That simplicity equals effortlessness.

But simplicity without identity just feels hollow.

You cannot wake up, throw on jeans and a T-shirt, and expect it to land, unless you’ve already done the internal editing.

Effortless style requires attention.

Attention to proportion.

To grooming.

To silhouette.

To lifestyle.

To who you are becoming.

It requires discipline.

The kind that looks like instinct from the outside.

You don’t start with fewer clothes.

You start with sharper questions.

• Who am I dressing for right now?

• What does my life actually require of me?

• Where do I disappear in my clothes, and where do I feel fully seen?

Because simplicity is not about reduction, but precision. And precision only comes from clarity.

This is the part of style that rarely gets talked about in trend reports or capsule checklists, the internal editing, the quiet refinement, the alignment between who you are and what you wear.

It’s also the work I do in my Style Strategy sessions. Not stripping wardrobes down for the sake of minimalism, but refining what’s already there until it feels exact.

Because effortlessness isn’t about owning less. It’s about knowing more.

There’s something I’ve noticed over the years, and it happens almost automatically now.

I’ll be walking somewhere, coffee in hand, half distracted, and suddenly I catch myself staring at someone.

Not in a strange way.

Just… curious.

Because something about how she’s put together feels deliberate. And I always try to decode it.

People assume, as a personal stylist, that I’m obsessed with clothes.

I am.

But what really pulls me in isn’t the piece itself.

It’s how it’s worn.

The first thing I notice is placement.

A sleeve pushed up just enough to show the wrist. A shirt tucked slightly off-centre. A blazer thrown over the shoulders, but not in a careless way, in a ‘I know exactly what I’m doing’ way.

You can tell when something is intentional because it reads immediately.

The decision.

Then my eye moves to the smaller things.

Style doesn’t actually live in the big statement coat. It lives in the quiet touches.

A brooch on a cuff instead of a lapel.

An ear stack that feels personal, not copied.

Glasses that frame the face in a very specific way.

Accessories that create volume, not just decoration.

Those are the things that make you look twice.

Style lives in those tiny negotiations.

In the way someone finishes an outfit (the extra ten seconds they gave it).

And you can feel it immediately.

They feel totally owned.

Texture is another one for me, I won’t lie, this borders on obsession.

A metallic trouser with a soft knit.

Linen brushing against silk.

A sequin skirt worn casually with denim.

When materials contrast, something interesting happens. The look gains depth and dimension. It feels layered, even if it’s simple.

I think sometimes we underestimate how much interest comes from texture alone. We assume we need more pieces, colour, or more statement.

But often, we just need tension.

And then there’s the overall balance of the look.

Proportion and volumes.

Where is the eye landing first?

What’s being emphasised?

What’s being softened?

When the balance is right, the whole look feels harmonious. It supports the woman wearing it instead of competing with her.

But if I’m honest, the thing that matters most isn’t visible at first glance.

It’s self-awareness.

You can copy outfits all day long. You can save inspiration until your camera roll is exhausted.

But if you don’t know what actually feels like you, it won’t land.

When a woman understands herself, her body and colours, her lifestyle, her preferences, what makes her feel strong, what makes her feel exposed, her wardrobe becomes lighter.

More efficient.

More hers.

And that’s usually where I start in my Style Strategy Sessions.

Not with trends, or overwhelming shopping…

But with questions.

What are you drawn to repeatedly?

What do you avoid?

What do you wear when you feel powerful?

What do you wear when you want to disappear?

Because once that’s clear, everything else becomes easier.

Shopping becomes intentional.

Outfits become quicker.

Confidence becomes less performative.

And then you adjust, gently, over time.

Personal style in 2026 isn’t about keeping up, but imprinting your signature style, and expressing your personality.

Your glasses.

Your nail polish shade.

The lipstick that works with everything because you’ve worn it long enough for it to feel like part of your face.

That’s what people remember.

This Valentine’s Day, I’m not thinking about roses.

You know what you’ll wear before the invitation arrives.

De-influencing you (from a personal stylist)

The biggest mistake women make when trying to build personal style?

They focus only on the clothes.

And the women who dress the best?

They don’t.

Let me de-influence you for a second.

If you think building personal style in 2026 means following trends, buying “key pieces,” or saving outfit formulas from Instagram, you’re already behind.

The women whose looks stop you in the street…

The ones who feel magnetic without trying…

They’re not more fashionable.

They just have a richer inner world.

They pull from culture.

From art.

From music.

From history.

From architecture.

From emotion.

And then they translate that into what they wear.

That’s the difference.

This week, I went to the Maria Antoinette exhibition at the V&A.

If you haven’t been, it’s sold out, but find a friend with a membership and beg them to take you. It’s worth it.

Walking through that exhibition, you realise something very quickly: fashion has never been just fashion.

Maria Antoinette didn’t just wear dresses.

She engineered image.

She shaped perception.

She understood symbolism.

And centuries later, designers are still referencing her silhouettes, her theatricality, her volume, her romance. You see echoes of her in runway collections today. The exaggerated hips. The corsetry. The drama.

That’s influence.

And that’s what most women miss.

You don’t need to copy the 18th century.

But you can ask yourself:

• Do I love structure?

• Do I love excess?

• Do I love softness?

• Do I love power dressing?

• Do I love rebellion?

Museums aren’t just cultural outings.

They are visual libraries for your wardrobe.

Architecture teaches you lines and proportion.

Paintings teach you colour combinations.

Sculpture teaches you shape and volume.

You don’t need Pinterest for everything. Sometimes you need a gallery.

And then there’s Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl.

Let’s talk about that for a second.

That wasn’t just a halftime show. That was cultural storytelling.

He stepped onto one of the biggest stages in the world wearing tailoring that referenced heritage, masculinity, sensuality, and resistance all at once.

And yes! he wore Zara.

As a Spanish woman, I’m sorry but that was a moment.

The internet can debate “luxury vs high street” all it wants. What he proved is this: it’s not about the label. It’s about the narrative.

He didn’t rely on shock value.

He relied on identity.

The proportions were deliberate. The styling was deliberate. The references to Puerto Rican culture were deliberate. Even the colour palette felt intentional, bold but grounded.

That’s what makes a look powerful.

Not the garment.

The conviction behind it.

When someone knows who they are and dresses accordingly, it becomes magnetic.

And that’s what most women are missing.

So if you’re trying to build personal style in 2026, here’s what I’d suggest instead of buying another blazer:

1. Feed your mind outside of fashion.

Go to exhibitions. Watch films. Study album covers. Look at interior design. Walk through architecture-heavy areas of your city. Notice shapes. Notice colours. Notice moods.

2. Ask: what themes repeat in my life?

Are you drawn to strong shoulders? Romance? Minimalism? Texture? Darkness? Playfulness? Tailoring? Volume?

Patterns in taste are not random.

3. Translate, don’t copy.

If you love cathedral ceilings, maybe you love vertical lines.

If you love 90s hip-hop visuals, maybe you love oversized silhouettes.

If you love French rococo, maybe you love drama and detail.

The point isn’t to costume yourself.

It’s to borrow energy.

4. Add personality in the details.

The women who stand out don’t just wear “nice outfits.”

They wear something slightly unexpected.

A strong earring.

A sharper shoe.

A bolder shoulder.

A deliberate clash of colour.

They don’t stop at safe.

As a personal stylist in London, this is what I actually do.

I don’t just build outfits.

I help women decode themselves.

We look at lifestyle, yes. But we also look at references. At what moves you. At what you react to. At what feels powerful, nostalgic, rebellious, sensual.

Because clothes without personality are just fabric.

And trends without identity are just noise.

De-influencing you doesn’t mean rejecting fashion.

It means stopping the habit of looking outward for permission.

Instead of asking, “What’s in?”

Ask, “What feels like me?”

Instead of copying an outfit, ask, “Why do I like this?”

The best-dressed women aren’t trend-led.

They are self-led.

And that’s available to you too.

That feeling is usually telling you more than you think.

One thing I’ve noticed more and more lately, especially now that working from home is normal for so many of us, is how disconnected we’ve become from what getting dressed actually does to us. We throw something on because we’re at home. Because no one will see us. Because comfort feels like the priority.

And sometimes, that’s completely fine.

But if this is happening every single day, there’s usually something else going on underneath.

Your wardrobe is constantly sending signals to your brain. This isn’t poetic language, it’s neuroscience. What you put on tells your nervous system what kind of day you’re having.

These clothes say: we’re resting.

These clothes say: we’re going out.

These clothes say: we’re focused, alert, productive.

When you stay in ‘home clothes’ all day, your brain stays in home mode too. It does exactly what it’s designed to do, protect your comfort, look for ease, avoid effort. Which means you end up using twice as much energy trying to focus, resist distractions, or push yourself into work mode.

You’re not unmotivated.

You’re not lacking discipline.

You’re just sending your nervous system the wrong signal.

This connects directly to something else I’ve been reflecting on.

I’ve been digitalising my wardrobe for almost ten years. Long before it was trendy. I used to save outfit photos and combinations that worked so that on days I felt lost, I could go back and remember what I already owned and how I liked to wear it.

This year, the process looks different.

I’m doing wearing 100% of my wardrobe because I’m ready to invest more intentionally. Not more for the sake of it, but better. Higher quality. Pieces that actually match the life I’m living now.

And I don’t want to do that blindly.

So I’m wearing everything. Paying attention. Noticing patterns. Making a list as I go of what would truly elevate my wardrobe, instead of reacting to trends or impulse.

What’s become very clear already is that some things simply don’t belong anymore.

For example, I have a few A-line tulle skirts. Beautiful pieces. Good quality. I’ve styled them in every possible way, for different occasions, with different shoes, different tops. Nothing is a NO in theory.

But my body knows before my head does.

They don’t resonate. They don’t feel like me. And that means they’re ready to go, to a clothes swap or resale, to make space (and money) for what actually supports where I’m going.

This is where the nervous system piece becomes impossible to ignore.

If you keep telling yourself you want change, but you can’t bring yourself to dress intentionally, not glam, or ‘done,’ just intentionally, there’s usually a block underneath.

Your nervous system is wired for familiarity. It wants what it knows. Even if what it knows isn’t making you happy.

So when you start something new, a habit, a routine, a new way of dressing, you might feel energised for a couple of days, alive, and motivated. Then suddenly, you drop it.

Not because you failed.

But because your system says… okay, that was interesting, now let’s go back to what feels safe.

I’ve been there too.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth, if that cycle keeps repeating, nothing changes. You’ll end this year exactly where you started it. Same wardrobe. Same frustration. Same sense of wanting more but not sustaining it.

This is exactly why I work the way I do.

When your body resists getting dressed, the goal isn’t to fight it. It’s to acknowledge it. To notice the resistance and say, I see you, you’re trying to keep me protected. And then get dressed anyway, without turning it into a daily debate.

This is where a ready-to-wear lookbook changes everything.

When the outfits are already built from the pieces you own, you don’t have to decide in the moment. You don’t have to negotiate with your energy. You simply choose an outfit that already exists and put it on.

This is what I do with my clients as a personal stylist in London. We build more than 30 outfits from what they already own and organise them into a digital ready-to-wear LookBook, based on their real life. Work. Meetings. Evenings. At home. Low-energy days. High-impact days.

Then the work becomes repetition.

Not forcing or convincing.

Just showing up dressed, again and again.

And that repetition is what shifts identity.

We talk so much about manifestation, about changing outcomes, about vision boards and affirmations. But reality doesn’t change because you want it to. It changes when you start inhabiting the version of yourself who already lives there.

Clothes are one of the fastest ways to do that because they meet you every single morning.

When you change how you show up in something as tangible as your wardrobe, your nervous system recalibrates. What once felt unfamiliar becomes normal. What once felt uncomfortable becomes safe.

And from there, everything else begins to realign.

So I’ll leave you with this, not to judge yourself, but to get curious…

We’re already in February.

Which feels important, because this is usually the moment when the energy of a new year fades a little. When the intentions are still there, but the excitement has softened. And that’s often when habits either disappear… or quietly turn into something real.

For the past 20 days, I’ve been documenting what I wear as part of my wearing 100% of my wardrobe experiment. One outfit a day. No pressure to be creative. Just getting dressed, taking a photo, and adding it to what’s slowly becoming my ready-to-wear LookBook.

I didn’t expect how much clarity this would bring so quickly.

When you see your outfits next to each other, patterns appear without you forcing them. This week, for example, I can clearly see myself leaning into a more masculine energy. Vests layered over turtlenecks. Tailored silhouettes. Structure, but still comfort.

Those black trousers you see here? They’re basically my version of elevated joggers. Comfortable, forgiving, but polished enough that I can take them from working at home to a meeting just by changing what I add on top. A vest, a blazer, a different shoe, and suddenly the same base tells a different story.

I also noticed how much I’m playing with black and brown together. That contrast keeps coming up for me. It adds depth without effort, and it’s starting to feel like a signature rather than a coincidence.

Navy is still very present too. I talked about this last week, but seeing it repeated across outfits makes it even clearer. It entered my wardrobe last year as a way to soften my relationship with black, without losing elegance. It’s doing exactly what I needed it to do.

One outfit this week came directly from inspiration. I was watching the Spring Summer 2026 Haute Couture Matthieu Blazy for CHANEL on yesterday, and there were so many pencil skirts. It was my sister’s birthday, and she wanted to go to Chinatown. Immediately, the leather pencil skirt in my wardrobe came to mind.

I went to Pinterest, searched “leather skirt outfit,” picked an idea I knew I could recreate with what I already own, and styled it in my own way. Same bones, my personality. I even saved the reference image alongside the outfit in my LookBook.

This is what the ready-to-wear LookBook really does.

• - It takes the stress out of mornings.

• - It stops you forgetting pieces hiding at the back of your wardrobe.

• - It shows you what you actually wear, not what you think you wear.

And just as importantly, it helps you buy better later.

When everything is documented, you don’t shop out of panic or boredom. You see the gaps clearly. You know what you’re missing, what you’re overusing, what deserves an upgrade, and what doesn’t need to be replaced at all. If something truly isn’t working, you can resell it, make space, and reinvest with intention.

I’ve also started categorising outfits in a way that matches my real life. Client meetings. Fashion events. Running errands. Working from home. That last one surprised me….

One of the outfits this week was specifically for working from home, and I was reminded how much dressing intentionally affects my focus. If I stay in ‘home mode,’ my brain stays there too. Getting dressed properly, even when no one sees me, helps me be more productive, feel like I am working, and act like that.

None of this feels complicated. That’s the point.

It’s just attention. Repetition. And letting your wardrobe show you who you already are, instead of asking it to become something else.

For now, I’m just continuing. Wearing. Documenting. Noticing.

What’s been unexpectedly beautiful is that some of the women in my WhatsApp community have decided to go through this process too. They’re starting to document what they wear every day, sharing their outfits, paying attention to their patterns, and building their own version of a LookBook.

Seeing that unfold makes me really happy.

Not because of the outfits themselves, but because of what it represents. Women slowing down. Getting curious instead of critical. Making space to reconnect with themselves through something as simple, and as powerful, as getting dressed.

I can’t wait to see where we all are by the end of this year. How our wardrobes look, yes, but also how we feel in them. How much easier it becomes to get dressed. How much more at home we feel in our own skin.

So I’ll leave you with this, because it’s the question at the heart of all of this…
