The Confidence You’re Looking for Isn’t on the Hanger. Issue #18
"Technically I have clothes. Emotionally, I have nothing to wear"
There’s something I need to tell you.
Not all transformations come with a shopping bag.
Some come with a mirror, a deep breath, and a woman deciding she’s ready to feel like herself again.
A few weeks ago, I worked with a beautiful client, calm, soft-spoken, kind. But there was something about her energy that felt… muted. You know when someone is there, but not fully there? That was her.
We went through her wardrobe together.
We didn’t add anything new.
We just restyled what she already had.
And somewhere between the fifth outfit and the eighth, something started to change. Her posture straightened. Her voice lifted. Her eyes sparked. A smile…
She sent me a text a few days ago, with a picture of a date-night outfit. But here’s the part that got me: the message wasn’t from her. It was from her husband.
He said, “Thank you for bringing my wife back.”
(It was a bit longer, but I can’t share all of it as it is very personal. How cute is that??)
Turns out, they’d been on the verge of divorce. She never told me at the time. But I could totally feel the way she’d lost connection with herself. The wardrobe wasn’t only about clothes. It was her way of reaching for something.
And through that session, she didn’t just find new outfits.
She found her energy again.
Her presence.
Her spark.
That’s why I love what I do. This touched me so much.
Because for so many women I work with, the problem isn’t “I have nothing to wear.”
It’s that what’s in their wardrobe belongs to a past version of themselves
→ The one who played small at work
→ The one who dressed for practicality, not pleasure
→ The one who forgot that style is a form of self-respect
And now? She’s ready for more.
But the closet hasn’t caught up.
If that sounds like you…
You don’t need another shopping spree.
You need a system.
You need a wardrobe that’s aligned with:
→ Your life (not your fantasy Pinterest board)
→ Your body (as it is today, not ten years ago)
→ Your personality (including the bold, joyful, magnetic parts that deserve airtime)
Here’s how to start shifting things, without buying anything new:
1. Choose Structure Over Slouch
There’s a reason the right blazer can make you feel like the CEO of your life, even if you’re just heading to the school run or working from your kitchen.
A strong shoulder, a shaped waist, a clean line, these aren’t just design details.
They hold you up when you haven’t had coffee yet.
They say, “I’m here,” and you don’t need to speak.
2.Use Contrast To Create Presence
Contrast tells the eye where to look. And when you learn how to use it, in colour, shape, texture, you start to guide how people experience you.
→ A black trouser with a white tee.
→ A crisp shirt with soft, wide-leg trousers.
→ A delicate blouse under a leather jacket.
One friend had the most stunning camel trousers, but kept pairing them with more beige and tan. She was disappearing into them. I suggested a navy shirt and a berry lip, and just like that, she was seen.
Contrast doesn’t shout. It directs.
3. Let Your Neckline Breathe
Here’s a subtle but powerful one.
Opening up your neckline, whether it’s a V, a scoop, or an unbuttoned shirt … softens your face and straightens your spine. It says: I’m open, I’m here, and I’m grounded.
It doesn’t have to be low. Just intentional.
Sometimes, just switching from a high crew neck to a scoop can change your whole energy. Try it in the mirror. You’ll see what I mean.
4.Match Your Outfit To Your Intention
Before you dress for the weather or the meeting or the Zoom camera… ask yourself:
What energy do I want to bring into this space?
Are you leading? Listening? Learning?
Let your outfit support that.
One day you might need structure and clarity, hello, sharp trousers and tucked shirt.
Another day, you need softness and flow, cue your favourite silk blouse and wide-leg jeans.
You are not dressing for others. But dressing with purpose.
5.Finish The Outfit
Ever feel like your outfit is almost there, but something’s off?
Often, it’s not what you’re wearing. It’s what’s missing.
A cuffed sleeve. A tucked-in hem. A polished shoe. A belt that says “I see you.”
These micro-details don’t take time. They take intention.
And that’s what makes someone say, “Wow, you look amazing,” even if you’ve worn it a dozen times.
Confidence isn’t loud.
It’s quiet alignment.
And when your wardrobe reflects who you really are, and where you’re going,
everything else starts to click into place.
You start walking differently.
Speaking differently.
